Where to eat in Litlle Italy

Hi All,

I am looking for an inexpensive place to have lunch in LIttle Italy. I am looking for pasta. Any suggestions?

Read this page on best Italian restaurants from the FAQ. Most people would advise that you steer clear of Little Italy; it%26#39;s largely filled with tourist traps.

Play or musical with 22 year old sone

My son and I are returning to NY next week. We saw Spamalot the first time and loved it! We have tickets to Jersey Boys this time, but I would also like to grab some l/2 price tickets when we get there. What would you recommend for a young man ( and his mother!) It could be a musical or play, on or off broadway. I%26#39;ve looked at August: Osage County, Curtains, Alter Boyz, and Ave. Q (although I might be a bit embarrassed to see that with him from what I have read). Any comments on these or any other suggestions? I thought about Wicked but doubt I can get any l/2 price.

Play or musical with 22 year old sone

My 20 year old son and I went to see Avenue Q at Christmas time-its good fun and every one laughs at the homourous bits so I wouldn%26#39;t think you would feel embarrassed at all-we are talking about puppets doing the more risque stuff-its very funny and entertaining. I saw Altar Boyz with my 16 year old that is good too but I would rate Avenue Q above it.

You%26#39;ll love Jersey Boys-have a great trip!

Play or musical with 22 year old sone

Thanks for your reply! I will keep a look out then for Ave. Q discount tickets. It does sound like a fun show. Just wish they weren%26#39;t so darned expensive--ha! Thanks again!

I agree about Avenue Q, lots of fun and one of my favorites.

As far as Jersey Boys, well, it is fantastic, I hope you enjoy it.

Have fun.

Thirty Nine Steps was very good. A dark comedy performed by 4 people. Xanadu is fabulous and you will laugh out loud the whole time. We were hesitant to see this and it ended up being our favorite. I was able to get half price tickets for both shows.

How about RENT? Both my twenty-something daughters absolutely love it (and so do I). It%26#39;s closing in September after almost 12 years.

It was made into a movie and you have the option of renting the DVD before your trip to see if it%26#39;s something you would enjoy. A wonderful 2 hours to share something truly special with your son!

Have a great trip!

young frankenstein was very good %26amp; suitable I think for both of you. Avenue Q might appeal to him too. Alter Boyz was just okay but I got like 75% off or something like that months ago, not really worth 1/2 price though. Not sure your 22 y/o son would like Wicked.

Thanks for some great ideas, and some I wasn%26#39;t familiar with. I will definitely check them out. BTW, do you think it%26#39;s better to get tickets at broadwaybox.com or get better deals/seats at the TXTS booth. Thanks again for your help!

I just saw Saved--the musical. I think your son (and you) will enjoy this off-Broadway (cheaper price but great theater).

Rent is fabulous, go see that if you never have as it is closing Sept 7.

If you%26#39;re brave, as always, I will reccomend Spring Awakening, touchy subjects that if you%26#39;re worried about Ave. Q you might not want to watch with your son, but still very good show.

  • Seafarers and International House

    Hi,

Has anyone stayed at the Seafarers and International House at 123 E. 15th St. before?

I%26#39;m a single female travelling to NYC for a vacation and am wondering if this is a safe area to stay. Any comments, suggestions welcome and appreciated! ^_^

    Thanks!

The neighborhood should be fine. You may find some better hostel info on the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum.

    hi,

my girlfriend and i stayed there a few months ago and it was nice.

no frills, but clean and nice price.

the people at the front desk were very nice, and it is a christian run organization, not a sleazy hostel by any means. next time we visit ny, we will stay there again. you can share a bathroom with the floor, or have your own for a bit more.

would recommend for a no frills scenario. if this is your honeymoon, stay at the four seasons! a safe area very close to union square

    hope this helps.

    Hi Pete,

Just thinking of staying there with friends in December. Does the place have any bugs at all? And should women alone feel safe walking around the neigbourhood. They told me they were in Gramercy Park -- what%26#39;s that are like?

    Faith

    hi,

no it was very clean, no bugs, not much as far as frills, but centrally located. a good breakfast place around the corner.

for the price, you cant go wrong

sorry missed the last part of your post. it is as safe as any area in new york as far as we saw. didnt feel threatened at any point. it was also a bustling neighborhood with a lot of people around 24 - 7, so we always felt safe.

    hope this helps,

Pete- 1st, thanks for the posts on the I House. I am going there in a few weeks to take 2 students to visit NYU. My question- Is it possible for a third person to sleep in one of the rooms with the double beds? We are booked for 1 double bed room w/ shower, and one single room.We can all 3 stay in one room if there is enough room for someone to sleep in a chair or even on the floor. I know we are booked for a room on the 8th floor- (i think he said 8th) Anyhoo- any info would be great! Thanks, chillykim

i think there is enough room for another person to sleep either on a cot or the floor, but it would be pretty tight.

    hope this helps.

Hey all - the trip to NYC and NYU was wonderful. The weekend weather was great, and it was fun to see so many people dressed up and walking the streets in costume. The Seafarer%26#39;s was good. The rooms are tiny, just a twin bed, little desk, dresser with TV, and a sink.We also had a roll-a-way in there. Not much room for a third person but my son slept on the floor. Toilet down hall and shower down the hall. We paid the student rate of $76.00 per nite- no tax. Some of the rooms do have a bath for a little more a night (I think $20.00 more), but all in all a great place to stay cheap! We were right at Union Square, right down where many of the students hang out. Rode the subway all over the place. Just had a great time. We will stay here when we go back. Clean, cheap, great location. Thanks to everyone for all the tips! take cae, chilly

glad you had a nice trip!

  • Coming to New York

We are so excited to be coming to new york in the beginning of June. Hard to plan things as all the updates that we have signed up for are still sending may information only. Have signed up for the apple greeter so that should be cool Anyone ever done it? Got a comedy show lined up for Sat nite. Would you say its just as good to get tickets when we get there rather than prebuy. Thanks

    Coming to New York

There are many, many posts about the Big Apple Greeter and lots of trip reports that describe people%26#39;s experience. I do not recall ever seeing a BAG trip report in which the poster did not thoroughly enjoy and appreciate it.

Here%26#39;s a thread about BAG in general:

And here are some trip reports from people who%26#39;ve used the service:

When you ask about buying tickets in advance vs. buying them the day of, what kinds of tickets are you referring to? Comedy shows? I don%26#39;t really see any advantage to waiting, unless you%26#39;re unsure of which day you plan on going.

    Coming to New York

Lots of folks have had Big Apple greeters and they always love the experience. If you do a text search (box just above here) for something like had a big apple greeter, you should find previous posts.

As to other tickets to prepurchase, I%26#39;d look at getting theater tickets in advance. Broadwaybox.com has discounts on the left column to many shows. If you plan on going to the Empire state or Statue of Liberty, lines to buy tix to those are long and can be bought online.

Here%26#39;s a link to the FAQ with lots of good info.

What about going to a Yankees game Hard to figure out what kind of view you will have. Best place to buy online?

The best place to buy Yankees tickets is through their website:

    鈥lb.com/schedule/sortable.jsp鈥?/a>

If they%26#39;re sold out for the date you want, try www.stubhub.com

If you look at the seating chart on the yankees website it will give you a few from a seat in each section to give you an idea of what the view and the price will be.

Fun in NYC - Rent a bike and ride the path by the water

You can rent a bicycle for around $7 an hour, and ride the flat, beautiful bike path that rings Manhattan by the water! (From the GW Bridge to Staten Island Ferry on the West Side; all up the East Side.) (Central Park has bikes too, but not such a flat ride, and a lot more work!) The only thing is, you can%26#39;t lock your bike up and leave it--it probably WILL be stolen. Just look up bike shops in the Yellow Pages.

Fun in NYC - Rent a bike and ride the path by the water

Hooray! We bike all over NYC and it%26#39;s a great way to see the town. True, safety and theft are top concerns, but there are new bike paths being set up every month.

frsnwsalt - where did you rent your bike?

to find more bike shops that rent bikes, go to Transportation Alternatives:

Riding along the rivers in Manhattan in the summer is one of my favorite things.

    It%26#39;s just beautiful...

    Where, exactly, is Pamela?

Ooops--that should say NYC, not Pamela!

I%26#39;ve rented from Sixth Avenue Bicycles in Chelsea, and Liberty Bicycles, in Hells Kitchen. Both are in the link that QueensBoulevard gave. http://www.transalt.org/resources/bikeshop

    Subway, Taxi or Limo?

Planning our 3rd trip to NYC this July, but we%26#39;re bringing two first-timers with us.

First time we landed in the middle of the day and took the Air Train into Manhattan. Loved it!

Second time I went with work and landed late at night. We had a large group, so they booked a limo transfer. It was a huge headache. They lost our confirmation, were therefor late, had the payment all messed up. Ugh!

Well, this time I%26#39;d like to do the Air Train again, but we%26#39;ll be landing at 9:30 pm. Should we be concerned taking the Air Train at that time? Also, I know my husband and I can pack everything we need in one carry on each, but I can%26#39;t speak for my guests, and I know the Subway is a challenge with tons of luggage.

That said, would you recommend booking a limo transfer or just hailing a taxi outside baggage claim? Party iof 4 and flying into JFK, if that helps at all. We%26#39;ll be staying at the W New York Tuscany hotel on 39th btwn Lex and Park. Thanks guys!

    Subway, Taxi or Limo?

You could consider taking the Air Train and the LIRR into Penn Station rather than the subway. Might be a little more luggage friendly at that hour and Penn Station is at 32 Street and 7th Ave.

    Subway, Taxi or Limo?

Depending how much luggage the friends have, you may want to consider AirTrain to Jamaica to the E train (subway) - get off the E train at Lexington Avenue (the first stop in Manhattan) and take cab to your hotel.

The subway will take a little more time but LIRR doesnt run as frequently that time of night, so the trip time could take about the same.

It is definitely safe to take either that time of night - the subway will probably have lots of other travelers and airport employees.

The AT to Jamaica and then the E to Lex was the exact route we took last time. I%26#39;m much more of a public transport junkie and less inclined to hail a cab or hire a limo if it%26#39;s not necessary. But I have to admit, I have a feeling the baggage might be an issue. We%26#39;ll just have to play it by ear once I see how much they pack. We%26#39;ll only be there for 4 days after all.

Thanks guys. Any more suggestions would be welcome.

How to get Good Mets Ticket 12th July

    Hi

Visiting from UK in July, desperate to see a ball game, the Saturday 12th ideally

Using MLB website I can only secure Upper reserved ( No Alcohol!!) Would really like a slightly better seat and enjoy a beer. Are more tickets likely to come up in other sections, or can anyone recc a different outlet to get tickets

How to get Good Mets Ticket 12th July

You%26#39;ll have to go through a ticket broker. try stubhub.com or ticketsnow.com for example.

Be prepared to pay at least double the face value. But if you%26#39;re in a pinch and really don%26#39;t want to sit in the nosebleeds, it%26#39;s worth it.

FYI Mets games are broken down into ';platinum'; ';gold'; ';silver'; and so on categories depending on the popularity of the opposing team and the dates. Your match is on a ';gold'; date hence the high prices and low availability.

How to get Good Mets Ticket 12th July

Thanks I%26#39;ll look them over. Also just came accross,Coasttocoast tickets. Anyyone any oppinions on these, the prices looked OK and they ship to UK

    Thanks

The reason why I suggested Stubhub is that you can pick up the tickets you purchase at Shea Stadium the day of the game (up to two hours before and up until the 5th inning should you for some reason get there very late!!. You just need i.d.

Don%26#39;t know coast to coast tickets, they%26#39;re probably legit. Most of these places charge exorbitant fees but what can you do.

    Enjoy the game.
