Hotel Question

Not exactly sure where to put this question, but since it is an NYC related topic, I will ask it here. I am taking my brother-in-law and nephew to their first Yankee game on July 19th. We are driving up from Cleveland, OH. I would like to stay at a New Jersey hotel that is close to the train system into the city and Yankee stadium. I don%26#39;t want to stay in the city since the prices are high and parking is insane. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate the help!

Thanks ...

Hotel Question

There is an entire section of the FAQ about lodging outside of Manhattan, especially New Jersey, that should give you all the info you need. It%26#39;s here:

Hotel Question

Thanks Crans! This is perfect.

Memorial Day Weekend plans

The Corning Museum of Glass and ';American Impressionism: Paintings from The Phillips Collection'; at Memorial Art Gallery are two reasons my husband and I plus friends (ages 55-64) are considering a trip to Rochester over Memorial Day Weekend. We%26#39;d appreciate your comments on either plus recommendations on a B%26amp;B and notable (in their distinctiveness, not necessarily the most expensive) spots for lunch and dinner.

Memorial Day Weekend plans

Corning is a good hour and forty-five minutes away. Were you thinking of staying in Rochester and then driving down just for the day? Or did you want places in Corning?

Memorial Day Weekend plans

It seems as if there%26#39;s plenty to do in Rochester for May 24-26 without driving to Corning. Our trip from Cleveland will take five hours itself.

Ok, that%26#39;s why I wanted to check about driving down to Corning!! Perhaps someone else can recommend a B%26amp;B, I know some chain hotels, but not really a B%26amp;B. What kind of lunch %26amp; dinner places are you looking for? Something simple, casual, or more upscale?

What kind of lunch %26amp; dinner places are we looking for? Something memorable...could be simple, casual, or more upscale. Actually a range would be good (for our budgets). The four of us regularly seek out new dining adventures; in fact we%26#39;re headed to Cleveland%26#39;s Ethiopian restaurant (Empress Tatu) to celebrate Sally%26#39;s birthday next week.

I moved to Rochester last May and there were two things everyone asked me when it came to food. 1) Have you had a garbage plate yet? (My reaction: Ummm, ew, what%26#39;s a garbage plate?? This should explain: http://rocwiki.org/Garbage_Plates) As of 2 weeks ago, I have finally had a garbage plate. In my opinion it was okay, better if you%26#39;re stumbling home drunk at 2am I%26#39;m sure...and I wasn%26#39;t. If you want something that%26#39;s truly a Rochester ';delicacy'; perhaps someone can recommend their favorite location for one. 2) Have you been to Dinosaur? That also took me a while, but I%26#39;ve been back quite a few times. It%26#39;s a BBQ place that I think started in Syracuse. Here%26#39;s some information on that: http://rocwiki.org/Dinosaur_Bar-B-Que One of people%26#39;s biggest complaints is parking, but there%26#39;s a parking garage on the corner. I just park there if there%26#39;s nothing on the street outside. There usually is a decent wait though, so be prepared. Might want to check it out for lunch.

Speaking of lunch, I just ate at this place Friday night. Had a lovely night, the staff was wonderful and the food was great. Well priced. They have a lot of paninis. Depending on what you%26#39;re doing during the day, it%26#39;s located right downtown, so it makes it easy to pop over: http://rocwiki.org/Gusto.

Something else that%26#39;s a little different is this place: http://rocwiki.org/Simply_Crepes. The one location is in Pittsford, right on the Erie Canal. (My Dad was so excited he got to see the Erie Canal when I moved here, so if you are also interested in seeing it, I believe Pittsford has a park...) I haven%26#39;t actually been to Simply Crepes, but I%26#39;ve eaten it at the Ball Park %26amp; it%26#39;s tasty...yes, at the Ball Park! Why not, right?

I have more restaurants to recommend, but have run out of time, I%26#39;ll post more later.

Apparently I don%26#39;t know how to post links... In order:

Thanks, Kat, for the great suggestions.

Tell me, is there any reason NOT to come Memorial Day Weekend? It seems as if a number of places to stay are already booked. We could postpone our visit until June 7-9.

The two places I might recommend to stay would be The Inn on Broadway (that is downtown)

http://www.innonbroadway.com/main/index.php

or the Delmonte Marriott in the Village of Pittsford.

marriott.com/hotels/…

My favorite restaurant is Veneto (it%26#39;s downtown) - you would want reservation if you are 4 or more. It is casual, great food.

Also downtown-ish is Sinbads on Park Ave. We like it in there a lot.

http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/dining/guide/Sinbad+s/

If you walk through the Park Ave area, be sure to browse through the Parkleigh Pharmacy (NOT a pharmacy)

http://www.parkleigh.com/

and Stevers Candy Store

http://www.steverscandy.com/candy.html

and Craft Co #6

http://www.craftcompany.com/

If you are in the Village of Pittsford there is a neat Crepe restaurant in Schoen Place. That is along the historic Erie Canal. There are also shops and boutiques in there and along the village main street. Nearby is the amazing Pittsford Wegmans. A must do. Their Tastings restaurant is wonderful.

If it were me I%26#39;d come here for the Jazz festival. It is HOT. That is June 13 - 21.

http://www.rochesterjazz.com/

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks, Carmen, for such an array of suggestions. Yes, we do want to come for the jazz festival some time but not this year as we have plans to hear Chris Botti in Pittsburgh June 21.

RJF line up released today looks terrific, but given that we%26#39;ll be in town several weeks beforehand, can anyone steer us someplace to listen Saturday and/or Sunday evening?

My wife and I will arrive at Newark airport this Saturday May 31 at 1:10 p.m. and fly out at 9:15. We want to see the statue of Liberty. Will we have time (this time of year) and what is the best way to do that. If not what else could we see instead of sitting in the airport during that time.

You should repost this question on the forum for New York City. The NYC forum is here:

    Statueof Liberty

    ok Thanks

You can%26#39;t get into the Statue--only on the island and the base of the Statue--and you don%26#39;t have enough time to do Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island because of long lines. The best way to see it with such little time is to take a yellow cab from Newark to Battery Park, which is at the lower tip of Manhattan. Tell the driver to take you to the ferry terminal. Then get on the Staten Island Ferry and do a roundtrip (there%26#39;s nothing to see on SI). It%26#39;s a great ride and it%26#39;s free. 30 minutes each way. Terrific views of the skyline. You can walk to Ground Zero if you want to see that. Within walking distance: Stock Exchange and National Museum of the American Indian--at Bowling Green, right across right across from Battery Park. Three subways at the park will take you almost anywhere else in the city. Art or sites?

Hey thanks a bunch for the advice. I thought the lines might be long. I think this is what we will do. Do you know about how much the cab ride will be from Newark airport to Staten Island ferry? Thanks again

I%26#39;m sorry, I don%26#39;t know for sure, because we usually fly out of LAG or Kennedy, but I would guess about $30 to $35.

I forgot to mention that if you like to walk, the Brooklyn Bridge is within walking distance, too. It%26#39;s a great bridge to walk across, especially at dusk. You would head up Broadway and when you see City Hall, hang a right, and you%26#39;ll see the entrance to the bridge.

The Staten Island ferry terminal is on lower Manhattan.

Personally I think this is a poor choice. The water taxi from Liberty Landing Marina will give you a CLOSER view. Believe me, I%26#39;ve done it.

Where is the liberty landing marina, how much does the water taxi cost, how much does a cab cost from Newark airport to there and is there anything else to see at or near the marina

    Thanksgiving day

    Hi there

I would like to catch the Macy%26#39;s parade on 27th November and have planned to stay in NYC during this period for 3 days. Besides the parade I%26#39;m also thinking of visiting some of the places such as ESB, TOTR, etc. However it just occured to me that these places may be closed. Will these tourist places be closed?

How about shopping malls are they open on Thanksgiving Day?

Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

    Thanksgiving day

Although many sites and almost all stores will be closed on Thanksgiving day itself, the rest of the weekend is normal and then some....everything will be open and crowded; also do remember that this is New York City and we are not known for ';shopping malls';....we have a few but that is not what shopping is about here

please help about hotel...very picky and losing my mind...

okay...so me and my boyfriend are going to nyc on 25th september for 5 nights.

We are splashing out since it is a special occasion and finding a hotel has been a nightmare..

Here it is, we would like a king sized bed, smoking (i know i know...) and somewhat on the luxury side and preferrably somewhere that has internet access (and a bonus would be a balcony if the hotel is non smoking, surely you could smoke on balcony?)

Price wise, our budget is 1200 UK pounds...i know that may seem a lot, and i know the smoking thing..

I have post before asking for advice on either the kitano hotel, or the san carlos. I think the san carlos is a bit over budget...

    Please help!

please help about hotel...very picky and losing my mind...

    Hi

We%26#39;re staying at the Hotel on Rivington which looks fab. It%26#39;s in a really cool area too, Lower East Side. We%26#39;re staying for 5 night and i think it%26#39;s just slightly over your budget, about 拢1500. 拢1200 is actually not a lot of money if you want something %26#39;luxury%26#39; in NYC!

This is for a high corner room with a balcony. I think the whole hotel is non-smoking but the balcony might help you out.

please help about hotel...very picky and losing my mind...

    Hi mujipor!

I have to agree with BST in the previous post, your budget equates to $377 per night + tax ($444 total). The reco for the Hotel on Rivington is one that has been made quite a few times - check it on the search box at the top of the posts.

We will be $279 per night including tax for the Ivy room in the Ivy Terrace Bed %26amp; Breakfast (non-hosted). It%26#39;s in a great location for shops transport restaurants etc, 230 East 58th street between 2nd %26amp; 3rd. It has a king sized bed and although there is no smoking in the room ($300 penalty) you can smoke on the balcony, overlooking the street. It has cooking facilities and there are breakfast items in the fridge for you to use.

    M

The Gild Hotel has a few smoking rooms, but their prices

may have be high unless you can find a special. The

location is lower Manhattan with subway station a block and a half away.

Ist TIme where 2 stay & what to do when I finished SHOPPING?

My first time to the big apple. Going in October and would like some advise on where to stay, how much to pay for hotel (recommendations please) and what to do when I have finished SHOPPING.........

    Will be there 6 days!

    Thanks

Ist TIme where 2 stay %26amp; what to do when I finished SHOPPING?

Since you don%26#39;t give us an idea of your budget, how long you are staying, and anything else, why not do a search on this forum. This question gets asked 10 thousand times a day, so do some searching and narrow down your choices and then ask.

The first thing you should do is post your questions on the forum for New York City. This is the forum for New York State. The NYC forum is here:

When you do, could you be a little more clear about whether you%26#39;re asking for help regarding the whole trip or just the NYC part?
