there may also be others, but you cover almost every weekend with these two.

Saturday July 19th
East Side Summer Festival
(on Lexington Avenue from 42nd - 57th Street)
Sunday July 20th
NYC Unfolds Street Fair
(on Broadway from Houston - Grand St. )
These 2 are going on the weekend we are in NYC.
Forgive the rather silly question - but what are we likely to experience in a *Street Fair* - is it mainly a shopping, music or food type fair. Basically is it worth changing around my itinerary just to take in the street fair, or do we walk through on the way back to the hotel from what we were going to do (Financial District on Saturday and Central Park on Sunday)
Thanks for your help
I wouldn%26#39;t change your itinerary around a street fair. They are redundant in my opinion. The food is the same and there are at least 5 of each food booth-- gyros, grilled corn, the ';thai'; place, the ';smoothies'; (i.e. a few strawberries thrown in a blender with water) and lemonade stands and so on. I remember reading an article in the NY Times about how the same 50 businesses own all the permits for each and every street fair in NYC.
As for wares, you%26#39;ll find people selling socks and underwear, knit sweaters, scarves, and 10 year old cosmetics.
Street fairs are totally lame in my opinion. I would rather go to a Greek festival in Astoria or a similar ethnic-type fair rather than NYC%26#39;s boring mall-like street fairs.
right itinerary has not changed. At least not for a street fair
I wouldn%26#39;t go so far as saying they are ';totally lame';, but would agree that they get old quick.
It%26#39;s one thing if they are associated with a particular ethnic celebration, or a church fair, or something like that. But usually they simply seem to exist for their own sake - ';We shut down 3rd avenue in honor of shutting... down 3rd avenue!';
Another problem is that the booths are set up in the street itself, so you have the option of walking down the street which can get really crowded and claustrophobic, or you can walk along the sidewalk and peer in at the ';backstage';- but once you%26#39;ve seen one deep fryer, IMO, you%26#39;ve seen %26#39;em all...it%26#39;s not easy to dip in and out.
They can be fun if in a neighborood you%26#39;d be going to anyway.
I agree about not changing your itinerary. However, if you look hard enough you can find some nice handmade jewelry and some super cheap, actually cool tee shirts. We also find it kind of fun to walk down the middle of normally busy NYC streets. You can get some different photographs from the middle of the street perspective.
