Algonquin This Memorial Weekend

Hello,

I%26#39;m planning to hike up Algonquin this Memorial Day weekend. We have not hiked in the Adirondacks this time of the year. Can you give me an idea of what to expect as far as trail and weather conditions? Any other tips? Thanks!

I don%26#39;t know about weather, check online for sure, there could very well be snow there still. If it%26#39;s going to be warm you want to be prepared for black flies for sure!

We hiked that several years ago. Like most of the high peaks the trail is bad - very very worn. Plan accordingly. It%26#39;s a nice hike though!

Have fun and report back!

Be aware that this is a grueling hike even though distance-wise it is shorter than most of the other highest peaks. The trail is well marked but you constantly hiking on rocky terrain. The last mile is quite steep.

Enjoy!!

Thanks folks for your input. The current forecast for Saturday and Sunday is low in the 40s and high around 70. Yikes, black flies! I didn%26#39;t think of that. I have read about this trail being steep and difficult, we%26#39;ll take our time. As long as the black flies hold off and the trail is not slippery, we hope to make it to the top.

Made it :). This trail is everything I鈥檝e read 鈥?challenging and rewarding.

The bug situation wasn鈥檛 bad thanks to the cooler temperatures the week before, but part of the trail in the 鈥榓lpine zone鈥?was covered with snow in varying stages of melting. We could never tell with each step, if the snow was going to hold, or we were going to slide, or our boots would end up in a deep slush puddle. But we made it! It was thrilling to finally follow the yellow paint on bedrocks to the summit. Amazing views of the high peaks.

Sounds like you had a great time. The best thing is you also avoided crowds I bet! Thanks for reporting back. Wish I was there.
