Hi,
I am planning a trip to NY in march 2009 with my husband.
Can anyone recommend what area to stay in and a good hotel?
I love the idea of Greenwich or Soho area and had a look at Sohotel...anyone stayed there?
I%26#39;m just not sure of what district is good for a short stay (4 nights)... do we stay in Manhatten Greenwich, Central park area???? I do not have a clue...lol
Help, please! x
Best area to stay in NY?GG,
There are many people with far more knowledge than I but I鈥檒l give you my opinion! IMO area isn鈥檛 important if you鈥檙e on the island as I found the subway to be great. You鈥檙e never going to be in the middle of everything so this isn鈥檛 really an issue either. I really enjoyed walking through the neighbourhood areas you鈥檝e mentioned amongst others but again this doesn鈥檛 mean you have to necessarily stay in a residential area. Next time I return to NYC I鈥檒l probably let the best deal lure me in for my budget. I stayed at the Affinia Dumont which is in the Murray Hill area of mid town. This is a residential area about 5-10 minutes walk to the ESB and Macy鈥檚 loved it there in particular the view. Central Park is huge so if you want to stay nr there you could be in one of many different areas.
Best area to stay in NY?Just a point of information - when you mention Greenwich - I presume you mean Greenwich Village.
Greenwich is a town in Connecticut, it is a suburb of NYC - on the Metro-North commuter railroad line; many people who reside there work in the City.
Also, Greenwich Village and Central Park are both located in Manhattan.
I suggest you check out a map of NYC and its environs to get your bearings and I%26#39;m sure a good guidebook would be of help.
You can check out hotel reviews on this Forum.
Many first time tourists stay in midtown Manhattan due to its proximity to many of the attractions in the City in which they are interested.

Benji! I%26#39;m so happy to hear you praise Murray Hill! I live here and it doesn%26#39;t get a lot of love but it%26#39;s definitely a pretty good location for a stay.
That said, GemGemP, I second Benji: It doesn%26#39;t really matter where you stay because it%26#39;s easy and inexpensive to get around - and quick! Since you%26#39;ve asked, I would go with your original thoughts and stay away from Times Square. But once that%26#39;s done, you have a lot of options. A lot will probably come down to where you can get the best deal (again, as Benji mentioned).
And, please, people - Greenwich is in Connecticut (or England!): It%26#39;s Greenwich Village or the Village, not Greenwich, for short. :D
Thanks! And now I know- Greenwich Village it is! x
