Impressionism at MAG

There%26#39;s an art review of ';American Impressionism: Paintings from the Phillips Collection,'; (Through June 15) and ';In Pursuit of Light and Leisure: Impressionist Masterpieces from the Permanent Collection'; (Through June 29) in yesterday%26#39;s city newspaper.

See http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/.

I%26#39;m so glad my husband and I have made plans to come to see the 54 paintings from the Phillips Collection and also look forward to the display of the MAG%26#39;s collection of paintings, prints, and drawings by European Impressionists.

Impressionism at MAG

Thanks for posting! I%26#39;m still fairly new to the city, so while I%26#39;ve learned a lot about restaurants and such, I%26#39;m still lacking in things like this. I%26#39;ll definitely have to check it out.

Impressionism at MAG

Has anyone been to see the American Impressionism exhibition?

Does anyone know if there is an audio tour with the American Impressionism exhibition?

I couldn%26#39;t find the answer on their site (after a QUICK look) but there is a spot on the bottom that says ';contact us'; if you really want to know.

Here%26#39;s the link:

It looks like a nice exhibit, I should make sure to get there.

:)

Not sure if there%26#39;s an audio tour; if there is it wasn%26#39;t offered to us. I found the exhibit enjoyable although it%26#39;s unlikely to bowl you over. As with many shows that come through Rochester the paintings are mostly of the ';second tier'; variety, but that%26#39;s part of the appeal in the sense that you%26#39;ll learn about a side of impressionism - the American variety - that%26#39;s not as familiar to most of us as are the giants of the genre. It%26#39;s also manageable in size; an hour would be adequate for most people, I think.

Thanks for your feedback, Dave. How informative were the wall signs mounted adjacent to the paintings? I%26#39;ve ordered the catalog ';American impressionist paintings and related works from the Phillips Collection'; through interlibrary loan, so I%26#39;ll have that background, too.

I thought the signs were pretty informative. There are large signs explaining some of the more general history of the movement and individual explanatory signs next to just about every individual painting.

We drove straight to MAG when we arrived in Rochester on Saturday and were not disappointed in the exhibition. Beal%26#39;s ';On the Hudson at Newburgh,'; which is the work featured in promotional material, shows a woman and her children as they watch a troupe of American soldiers preparing to depart at the beginning of World War I. It%26#39;s an epic piece, celebratory, full of heroic romance and confidence...such a marked contrast to the mood of the US on this Memorial Day.
