Where to stay in New York- best area/hotel?

Hi,

I am planning a trip to NY in march 2009 with my husband.

Can anyone recommend what area to stay in and a good hotel?

I love the idea of Greenwich or Soho area and had a look at Sohotel...anyone stayed there?

I%26#39;m just not sure of what district is good for a short stay (4 nights)... do we stay in Manhatten (lower east side), Greenwich, Central park area or Midtown???? I do not have a clue...lol
