Need a Vacation - Young Professional

I need a place to go! Cruises, Contiki, independent travel? I am 25, a single young woman, probably traveling solo. On a budget and not sure what to do, but I%26#39;d like to get a good week or so to vacation. I am trying to stay away from Caribbean vacations, but open to anything because I%26#39;d like to go anywhere! Spa, multi-state, multi-country, beach, you name it! Any single women travelers with advice? Places for young professionals? Thanks for your suggestions!

Need a Vacation - Young Professional

Depends on YOU.

%26gt;your budget, how quickly you want to go away, your interests, whether you are looking to meet people or just relax, how comfortable you are traveling alone, how long you have to be away...

Need a Vacation - Young Professional

I went on a 24 day Contiki through Europe last year, it was fabulous. I definitely recommend it!!! PM me if you want more info.

-megs

Although you may not have 3 weeks+ time, with a week+, a European destination would be wonderful:-) Have personally travelled solo many times to Europe and always enjoyed it..Capital Cities usually cover a diverse range of sites/activities and if it%26#39;s beach you%26#39;re looking for you can always head over to the Mediterranean coast from Portugal (actually, the Atlantic) all the way over to Greece..loads of great choices there..if it%26#39;s now through the Fall you%26#39;re looking into! Enjoy!

Where have you already been? That would be helpful to know.

For domestic/Canadian travel, if you haven鈥檛 been to San Francisco or Vancouver, I鈥檇 go there鈥攚onderful cities full of young people and not too terribly demanding on your budget since you鈥檙e spending dollars or CDN. If you want to feel like you鈥檝e gone to Europe without suffering the hit to your wallet, then go for Montreal.

While there are lots of ways to cut costs in Europe, there鈥檚 no getting around the fact that the Euro is absolutely killing the dollar right now. (Ditto the Pound.) While places like London, Paris, and Rome are worth taking the hit for, you might save those for a time when the dollar is healthier and go to Eastern Europe, where you can still get pretty good mileage out of your money. Poland is very trendy right now, for instance, and hasn鈥檛 yet linked to the Euro.

In Africa, Morocco is more expensive than it used to be but still a relative bargain and fairly easy for single female travelers.

In Asia, Vietnam is the current 鈥榠t鈥?destination (Keith McNally of Pastis, Schiller鈥檚, Balthazar, etc. is opening a restaurant there) and is very cheap for Americans. Lots of young people there, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

BUT, knowing nothing else about you, I鈥檇 probably pick Argentina. The dollar is still strong against the Argentine Peso, and there is a great mix of cosmopolitan urbanity (Buenos Aires), beaches, and nature tourism, particularly if you include a trip to Patagonia.

I would excise the idea of a cruise from your mind as quickly as possible if you hope to meet other young people!

Mopan River Resort in Belize is really cool. Its close to the Guatemala border but they pick you up in Belize City at the airport and bring you there (Continental flies to Belize City from Newark).

Its a 10? room all inclusive jungle lodge - but with all the creature comforts - cable TV, pool, included mini bar, the best drinks - Banana Velvets! Gorgeous rooms, gardens. The people who own it have traveled the world and this place is the result - every detail is perfect - and its really cheap for what it is! Every night after dinner they tell you where you are going the next day - Mayan ruins, cave tubing, cave exploration with Mayan pottery/artifacts, river kayaking, etc. All the guests are very interesting, professional world travellers.

If you have a good call with the owner, she may waive the single supplement!

South America is good. Dollar still goes pretty far (at least compared to Europe). Chile is wonderful and very safe for a single female traveler

I did a multi-city European trip alone last year. Krakow--Prague--Budapest--Vienna. Two week trip, trains between the cities. Met lots of great people as I went. Hired a private guide in one city so I was guaranteed someone to chat with. Met people while on day tours or just historical tours around certainly buildings. Had a great time staying at a small B%26amp;B where lots of other Americans were staying and ended up going out with my B%26amp;B mates a lot. I found the choice of hotel was critical to making my stay fun for me. I find big hotels too impersonal especially if I am keen on meeting other travellers.

If you only have a week I might say just do two cities. Can be exhausting to change locales all the time.

I would also recommend Turkey. I didn%26#39;t do it solo. I went with a female friend but it was very safe, an amazing country, and even a short trip to Istanbul and then maybe one other city would be wonderful.

If you had more time I highly recommend going solo to Australia. People were SOOOOOOOO friendly and I never laughed so hard in all my life than with the people I met there. Plus they have beaches, cities, amazing landscapes etc....

You might want to check out the journeywoman.com website. That%26#39;s about travel for women and I feel like they had some posts about solo travels.

PM me if you have more specific questions. I am totally a convert to solo travel and am planning another big solo trip this year.

  • Statueoflibertytickets.com - Trustworthy website?

I%26#39;m beginning to think my McAfee Security program may be preventing me from making reservations.

Has anyone else had problems with http://statueoflibertytickets.com ?

Before I could complete the reservation, I received a security alert, recommending I not continue and shut down my activities on that website.

Is this the correct website for reserving tickets in advance so we can see the Statute of Liberty and visit Ellis Island?

Any help would be appreciated. So far, I%26#39;ve been unable to book our Party Shuttle NYC Bus Tour or our Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Tour.

    Statueoflibertytickets.com - Trustworthy website?

Don%26#39;t know about that site, but here is where the official Statue of Liberty site says to get ferry tickets and monument passes: http://www.statuecruises.com/

    Statueoflibertytickets.com - Trustworthy website?

    I reserved www.statuecruise.com

Thanks so much, everyone. I will try the websites you suggested.

YIKES! I%26#39;ve been giving people this website (the one in the heading here) and they are charging $1 more than the statuecruises.com website which looks much more legitimate. I hope this is not a scam and am very sorry if I%26#39;ve caused anyone (like Tomcat !) any trouble.

Whiz - I don%26#39;t think Tom needs any help from you to get into trouble :)

In fact, the statueoflibertytickets.com website charges $6 more per person than statuecruises.com ($18 pp as opposed to $12). I have booked on impulse and regret it as I was given the time which was not the time I selected online. I%26#39;ve now cancelled this but was told that it would take 2 weeks for the refund to be processed and I may incur a cancellation charge of $7 per ticket which I guess is what this company charges for their service.

So sorry if this was my doing, virus.

    10% discount?

    Hi,

I was told that a couple of the department stores offer a discount if you show them your passport at customer services. Is this right? If so, which stores do this?

    10% discount?

    Hi London City Girl,

Yep I know Macy%26#39;s do an 11% visitors discount card which you can get by going to Customer Services. Usually you can use it for discount on most things but last time we went (Dec 06) we couldn%26#39;t use it on Perfume or cosmetics.

    Hope thsi helps :)

    Gem

    10% discount?

Bloomingdales does the same and we%26#39;ve heard Lord %26amp; Taylor will too.

Take some ID (we showed our UK drivers licence although you may want your passport to be in the safe side) to customer services in Macys (first floor mezzanine) and you%26#39;ll get a card that allows you 11% discout on everything except make-up and perfume and lasts about 28 days - although I may have this wrong. Whatever, it should last the length of your stay.

The Bloomingdales card is more restrictive and there%26#39;s a long list of things you can%26#39;t use it against (most designer goods are included on this list) and you have to apply for a new one each day.

So not only do folks who are using Euros get to buy things cheaper here than at home, but they also get 10% off??

At Lord %26amp; Taylor, ask the information desk as you walk in (it%26#39;s on the right). The discount there is 15%.

    as frank 3 said

    ';So not only do folks who are using Euros get to buy things cheaper here than at home, but they also get 10% off??';

but in our defence, ie the brits, you and your country folk get to claim the tax back on the vast majority of your shopping when you travel around the eu however we dont get such luxury when we visit your shores, apart from the 3 or so shops already mentioned.

Regarding the macys card its worth checking they havent got another better card floating about when we went to ny last year we were quite smug with our 11% card until we were informed that there was a magazine flaoting about with a 15% card for all users regardless of where they resided, also it may be worth noting that certain outlets in macys dont accept the 11% card for instance ralph lauren men, however they allow it off of ralph lauren kids.

    all the best

    the bear

All tourists can get the 11% including those from other states of the US. When I was there in November I was in the queue chatting to some very nice ladies from Florida who also had their 11% discount cards.

Yes youre right there are other cards around. We were in a bar one evening and my other half hung up a coat for a rather short lady who could reach the hanger and then got it down for her a few hours later and she gave us a 20% Macys discount card as a thank you.

Magnolia Bakery- what do you think?!

    Hello!

Only a week before I arrive and I cant wait... one of the things I really want to do is go to the Magnolia bakery.. but have heard mixed reviews - a friend says its great, but reading the reviews on here- im slightly undecided now... is it worth it? whens the best time to go to avoid the crowds? or is there somewhere better?

    thanks again for your advice!

    Sarah x

Magnolia Bakery- what do you think?!

I went on a mid-week morning. There were no queues at all.

It was nice to see the range of cakes, but they were just too sweet for me.

If it%26#39;s on your list, then just go - there%26#39;s nothing worse than coming home and having regrets that you didn%26#39;t see certain places all because of other people%26#39;s opinions.

Magnolia Bakery- what do you think?!

We popped in as we were passing one day, failed to see the attraction (although we%26#39;re not big cake %26amp; confectionery eaters).

I went mid-week around 3-4pm and there were only a couple of people in front of me.

It was ok, nothing really special though, and the icing on the cakes was way too sweet for me.

Looks like i%26#39;ll be in NY around the same time as you, we leave next week too!

ahh thanks for your words of wisdom- dont think im gonna have a problem with them being too sweet... :)

we leave next weds... look out for 2 essex girls stuffing their faces with cup cakes :D

    x

    Sarah,

I like Magnolia%26#39;s cakes, but then I like sweet things.

Personally though I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s worth waiting on a line for. So I would try to find a time of day when there are few people.

Magnolia is an old fashioned bakery in that the cakes and such look like something your grandmother would have baked 50 years ago.

    Also try,

    Billy%26#39;s Bakery on 9th ave between 21st and 22nd,

Butter Cup Bake shop on 2nd ave between 51st and 52nd.

I would have to second Billy%26#39; Bakery. Excellent!! Also, it%26#39;s very close to Chelsea Market Place, the home of Elena%26#39;s Cookie and Fat Witch Brownies. You could make an afternoon of sweet shopping!

    Now youre talking!!!!

Magnolia is highly overrated, but lucky for them, the rest of Bleecker St is really nice, so I wouldn%26#39;t cross it off the list by any means.

As for cupcakes, my favorites are from Crumbs.

    http://www.crumbsbakeshop.com/

I agree - overrated, but a great way to explore Bleecker Street and the West Village.

If you%26#39;re a true SATC fan, ignore the realism and go for it!

My husband and I were walking down Bleecker Street on Saturday (I cannot tell you how much I love being able to say that!) and we passed by a store with a line of people coming out the door. My husband asked me (the NYC research expert in the family) what they were all lined up for. I told him it was Magnolia Bakery and people were lined up to buy cupcakes. He said, ';You gotta be kidding me?'; LOL! We headed a little further and ended up at AOC where we had wine and a beautiful and tasty cheese and pate platter. Now that is my kind of cupcake!!

And Sarah0c, I agree with others...if you really want to stand in line for a cupcake, do it. Do whatever YOU want to do in NYC. You can%26#39;t do it all and it just gives you an excuse to come back!

Fine Dining and Ballroom Dancing in New York City

Does anyone have recommendations regarding fine dining and ballroom dancing in New York City. My friend would like to take his girlfriend out for her birthday on June 4th. We tried to plan it for the Rainbow Room at the Rockefeller Centre, however, ballroom dancing is not offered on June 4th. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Fine Dining and Ballroom Dancing in New York City

It%26#39;s the only place I know of with ballroom dancing in NYC. Swing 46 has swing dancing. Only other thought is doing the dinner cruise on

    bateauxnewyork.com

where they have a live band and dance floor. It%26#39;s much smaller, obviously.

Thank you. That looks like it will work well for them.

  • Affinia 50 - where to get the best deals?

    Hello

After reading many posts I have noticed that prices for hotel rooms can vary enormously depending on what website you use to book your accommodation.

I am looking to book the Affinia 50 and was wondering if anyone could suggest some of the best hotel booking websites around?

    Thanks for your time

Affinia 50 - where to get the best deals?

I%26#39;d start with the hotel website

    affinia.com

since they have some weekly rates. Then compare to

    hotels.com

    ortitz.com

    quikbook.com

While I love the Affinia 50, the Affinia Dumont has 1 bedroom suites with 2 queen beds and a queen sofabed (while Affinia 50 only has 2 double beds in bedroom). The Eastgate, while not nearly as nice has large 2 bedroom 2 bath suites.

Affinia 50 - where to get the best deals?

The Affinia 50 also has 1-bedroom suites with a sofabed in the living room area. I%26#39;ve found that most 3rd party bookers, i.e. Quikbook, don%26#39;t have large discounts on Affinia hotels. Most of their prices are the same or only slightly below the Affinia website.

NYWHIZ, there are now 8 people in my party from so we are going to stay in a hostel until 29/12.

From 29/12 we are going to move to Affinia for 5 nights and get 2 one bedroom suites - 4 people per room. All up it will cost about $65 a night for the ten nights. Not bad.

    Thanks for your help.

NYCforMe, sorry, I was making the distinction b/w double and queen beds but it did sound like I was suggesting there are no sofabeds at the Aff. 50 which is not correct.

toffa, I remember you said your last experience with a hostel in NYC was not good. Just make sure you pick one with good reviews here and on one of the hostel websites.

I didn%26#39;t know hostels were reviewed here.

Last time I was in NY I stayed at the Big Apple Hostel. Very basic accommodation but only a block from Times Square which is perfect for tourists. The subway was easily accessible too. I think I will probably go for this hostel again unless you are aware of any outstanding ones?

It depends on whether you%26#39;re going for private rooms or dorm room beds. With a party of 8, you could probably fill a dorm room some place. Hostelling International on the upper west side is considered one of the best (for dorm rooms) in NYC.

    hinewyork.org/new-york-hostel-reservations.s鈥?/a>

The Westside YMCA is also considered good, with the top floors more recently renovated. When you stay there, you get access to the health club facilities including an indoor pool.

Then there are some places downtown like East Village Bed and Coffee and Second Home on Second that would be in a more interesting, funky neighborhood. Chelsea Lodge is another option. I think since you%26#39;ll be staying in midtown at the Affinia and you%26#39;ve already staying in TS, you should try a different area.

All brilliant suggestions but everything is booked out. What a shame!

    :(

Are you sure? Sometimes reservation bookings online only take reservations 6 months in advance. It%26#39;s not yet 6 months from Dec. I would email or phone any you %26#39;re serious about.

Wow, gee, no more talk of apartment rentals.

    I wonder why ????

    Limo from the airport

What do you need, Paul? The cheap ones we recommend are

    dial7.com

    carmellimo.com

    For something nicer

    strusserslimousineservice.com

    mdlimousine.com

I think I remember reading something not so great about Lincoln Limo. Do a text search on the forum. Never heard of the other one.

    Limo from the airport

As you may have guessed from my other requests, there are a group of 7 traveling to New york, and I am just looking at the options to get from JFK to Affinia Manhattan.

If we got a taxi I think we would need 3, which would cost around $180, so just seeing what other options are out there.

Thanks again for replying so quickly to my questions, I feel that there will be more, as I am left to arranging the schedule.

    Cheers

    Paul

For a group of 7, you should be able to manage in 2 taxis which would be $60 x 2 or $120 all in for comparison purposes. Strussers has a stretch limo for 10 but doesn%26#39;t post rates for it on the website. If you want something fancy, I%26#39;d check that.

I wouldn%26#39;t bother using dial7 or carmel for a group of 7. They%26#39;ll send a minivan and charge a lot. Either get 2 OFFICIAL yellow taxis (and one should be a minivan which won%26#39;t cost extra) or get a nice stretch.

I%26#39;ve used ';Strusser%26#39;s'; a couple of times and have been very happy. Using them again this weekend for roundtrip transportation from Newark Airport to mid-town Manhattan.

I called my hotel and they referred me to Accord Limo Service, which is probably who I will use at least one way. I was leery at first but I found that they have a listing in the phone book and a fleet of a dozen or so cars. So I think I%26#39;ll go for it. They don%26#39;t have my CC number so if worse comes to worse and the limo isn%26#39;t there to pick us up, we%26#39;ll hop a YELLOW cab to the hotel for $60.

Speaking of yellow cabs, why are the impostors not yellow? Is it illegal for them to be yellow? If what they are doing is illegal anyway, why abide by the ';yellow'; rule?

I should add that the limousine fare from JFK to my hotel near 7th Ave. %26amp; 55th St. is $90 (including parking and tolls) plus tip. Not sure if it%26#39;s a negotiated rate through the hotel or just a small operation with not as much overhead or what.

Have a look on the affina website, Im staying there at christmas and noticed the other day they do a car service (you have to log in first to be able to see the page of options) also another poster the other day said they had stayed at another of the affinia hotels and had used their car service and said it was really good as they were waiting for you as you came out so saved having to hang around or phone someone. I cant remember the prices but know they did the stretch limos

  • Downtown/City Hall

    I was running over to Staples before lunch to grab some supplies, when I overheard some tourists... one of them was pointing out City Hall... ';that tall building, there!'; ';really? that%26#39;s city hall? it%26#39;s huge!';

Only problem is, they were pointing at the Stalin-inspiring, ';wedding-cake'; style tower which is, in fact, THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING. Not City Hall. An awesome building in its own right, but much younger than, and most definitely not, City Hall.

City hall is the small, domed building in the middle of City Hall Park.

    Don%26#39;t feel bad, though. Plenty of New Yorkers seem to make the same mistake. Case in point, the local who helpfully chimed in, at the end of the scene i described, ';Yeah! And da mayuh%26#39;s office is at da top!';

Just a pet peeve of mine... like the people who gaze respectfully at what they think is Ground Zero... but is actually the construction site where the 6-story tall Customs Building used to be.

    Downtown/City Hall

dave - there was a post yesterday, trip report I think, where the poster said from his hotel he had a great view of the ESB - however one of the astute and long time Forum members figured that from his location he was actually viewing the Chrysler building - easy to mix up if you%26#39;re not really familiar with the city, I reckon.

    Downtown/City Hall

    ';but is actually the construction site where the 6-story tall Customs Building used to be.';

Where is that exactly? I recall the U. S. Customs Office being in WTC Building #6 or #7, and the original Customs House is now the Museum of the American Indian...

Are you talking about the construction site on Fulton and B%26#39;way?

    and you can tour the ';real'; City Hall (it takes about an hour and is very interesting at least IMO) but you must book it well in advance. See link';

    鈥yc.gov/html/鈥eserve_tour.shtml

QB, sorry, yeah, I meant WTC 6, not the old classic one! :-)

    Desmond Tutu

Does anyone know if this hotel has private baths or shared? I couldn%26#39;t find this information on the hotel website, Quik Book, or TA. Hopefully I didn%26#39;t over look it. I know you guys get annoyed when people ask questions that have been previously answered. LOL. :o)

    Desmond Tutu

You%26#39;re correct that it doesn%26#39;t actually say anywhere one way or the other. With this photo it%26#39;s impossible to tell.

    ahl-tutucenter.com/modules/locslideshow.cfm鈥?/a>

    I would phone them.

    Desmond Tutu

Took Whiz%26#39;s advice and contacted them. Why didn%26#39;t I think of that??? What did the traveling public do before TA? Anyways, for future reference each room has a private bath. :o)

    Unique dining experience?

My friend and I are going to New York next week. She is a world traveller and I%26#39;d like to take her to a really unusual restaurant for dinner.

Cuisine can be anything..looking more for an experience or fantastic decor. Something to make us say WOW!!

    Thanks :)

    Melissa

    Unique dining experience?

The trend in New York restaurants over the past decade or so has been to strip down atmosphere and return the focus to the food. (So you now have $100/head restaurants without table cloths in rooms of exposed brick, etc.) There are a few stage-set places (TAO, Merkato 55), but most restaurants where the food is worth eating are not going to be about the experience except as it pertains to the food.

That said, you might think about:

River Cafe (for the views of lower Manhattan):

    www.rivercafe.com

The Modern (for the views of MoMA sculpture garden):

    www.themodernnyc.com/modern/modern.html

Chop Suey (for the views of Times Square; food is not as ambitious as at the previous two):

    http://www.chopsueynyc.com/

For really unusual food, I would try:

    WD-50:

    http://www.wd-50.com/

Momofuku Ssam (or Momofuku Ko if you can manage to get a reservation):

    http://www.momofuku.com/

    Unique dining experience?

    I think Buddakan is a wow setting with good food but I don%26#39;t know whether it%26#39;s ';unusual.';

    http://www.buddakannyc.com/

The views of the NYC skyline at

    rivercafe.com

    are usually considered pretty ';wow';.

If you%26#39;re here next Sat. and there%26#39;s still room, you might be able to do dark dining at Camaje.

    http://www.camaje.com/specialevents.html

River Cafe, and Modern have my vote;I also like One if By Land..on Barrow St.for its historical carrigehouse background;Cafe des Artiste is very pretty, near Park, nice atmosphere. You may want to take her on a dinner cruise around Manhattan-different and fun.

    - Go to a Russian restaurant in Brighton Beach. Esp on a Friday or Saturday evening, it%26#39;s quite a scene. Hopefully you%26#39;ll see a few birthday parties or retirement parties going on, and get invited to make a toast.

The service will be gruff and impatient, but get over that. Don%26#39;t take it personally. Just enjoy the atmo and the vodka. You won%26#39;t be disappointed, guaranteed:

    Other ideas:

    - Katz%26#39;s Deli, 2nd Avenue Deli or Carnegie Deli

These always impress, if only for sheer volume of meat. 2nd Ave is my fave, followed by Katz%26#39;s, but Carnegie is a classic experience.

My parents just took some old friends there last week, and it was a slam dunk.

    - An Ethiopian restaurant.

    Stretched coin?

I know it is tacky and sad but on my next trip to NYC in september, my boss at work wants me to bring him back a coin that has been stretched by a machine. My last visit, i managed to get one from ESB. Can anyone advise as to where any of these trashy, tacky items can be found?

    Stretched coin?

When we%26#39;re in the US we always have to get these for a friend%26#39;s daughter who collects them. We found machines in ESB gift shop, Prospect Park, Central Park Zoo and the Natural History Museum (just outside the gift shop).

    Stretched coin?

Here is part of a post from the thread (page two on link below) from jensdad on this very subject:

For locations in NYC, check this website:

    pennycollector.com/coins/ny/locations.html

The locations they have listed in New York City are all in Manhattan. They also have some locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn listed separately. I%26#39;m sure some of the information is out-of-date, but it%26#39;s a 鈥ennycollector.com/coins/ny/locations.html

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k1415486鈥?/a>

Those ';trashy, tacky items'; are my favourite souvenirs. Sad, I know, but I get a kick out of spinning that wheel...

As in the above post, they are %26#39;penny collector%26#39; machines. You see books to keep them in, in just about every souvenir store.

I know there%26#39;s one at Central Park Zoo - not in the zoo itself so you can just wander past.

Lol...one of my first jobs in the city was manning the machine at the top of the ESB. (Not nearly as fun as it sounded.) I%26#39;m lucky I went to college because I see now that I would have been replaced by the automated one they now have.

Thanks for the web links Kayeen, at least I now know where to look for them when I%26#39;m in DC on the weekend!

Thanks Kayeen for the links, I was a little embarrassed for the post! I was a little worried about the replies that may have come my way.

Many places that are moderately priced become less so on Thanksgiving. What do you want to spend? Where are you staying? Are you looking for a traditional meal? If not, you can always go to a Chinese restaurant and get an inexpensive meal.

    New trip, new questions

    Hi again,

First of all, I would like to say thank you for all the friendly tips and help I got when planning our trip last fall. We had a wonderful time in New York City - in fact, my Mom liked it so much that she wants to go back this year! :-) Now I have some new questions that I hope you could help me with:

    1) I would like to ask if anyone has recommendations regarding a decent hotel in Manhattan. The problem is that we are coming around Halloween/NYC marathon (this was unfortunately the only time that was OK for both of us) - and many hotels seem to be fully booked, and others very expensive. I am hoping to find a room for under 400 USD/night. I have made a cancellable booking at both, Thompson LES and the Washington Square Hotel, and I can see that Quickbook now offers 6 Columbus for around $315 as well. Which of these three would you recommend (both in terms of the rooms and the location) - or is there some other hotel that I should look at..? We will be arriving on October 28 and leaving on November 2.

    2) As we will be in New York for Halloween, we certainly hope to watch the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. However, someone once mentioned that there is a Halloween parade in Tarrytown, usually held a day or two before the one in NYC. I wonder if anyone has more information about this in 2008, and if it is worth visiting? I think it might be nice to take a short day trip outside the city, and this might be a perfect day to do it (given it is not the same day as the one in Manhattan). Apart from the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, any other suggestions as what to see or do on Halloween are very welcome. Since Halloween isn%26#39;t really celebrated here, this is our first time experiencing the ';real'; American Halloween. ;-)

    3) I am thinking about leaving the day of the marathon, hoping that the planes to Europe are a bit less full that day than the following days, when many runners and other marathon people are traveling back as well. As a runner myself, however, I would absolutely love to watch some of the marathon. My question is, if our flight departs around 16.30, would I have the time to do it - and where would be the best place to watch? Also, should I reserve more time to get to the airport than normally (I assume that if we take the subway instead of a cab, it shouldn%26#39;t be affected by the marathon)? We are flying out of JFK.

    4) Another running-related question. I wonder if there are fellow runners here who could give me a tip where to buy running shoes? Also, is there an expo open to the general public the days before the NYC marathon?

    5) For the last, since my Mom has now also seen most of the big tourist attractions, we would love to see some ';not-so-touristy'; areas as well. We both like walking outdoors, and I wonder if someone living in the city could give us suggestions for nice walking tours, parks or gardens, picnic places, places or buildings with interesting history, etc..?

I am sure I will be coming back with more questions in the months before our trip, but I would really, really appreciate it if someone was able to help me with some of the questions above.

A thousand thanks in advance! :-)

    New trip, new questions

If you are just looking at third party booking sites (quikbook, expedia, etc) they will not have all hotel rooms in the city listed. Hotels allocate SOME of their rooms to these sites, and not every hotel in the city participates in every site, so checking directly with smaller hotels might help. One reason hotels may seem sold out (and prices go up as hotels sell out) is because people hold rooms at 3 or 4 hotels until the last minute they can, so check back from time to time to see if anything opens up. While holding several hotels is a common practice (I do it myself, so please don%26#39;t take any of this as a put down) the longer you do so the higher the cost to the hotels, especially durring peak periods. And, of course, this cost is passed along to the clients. So I would encourage you to release the unnecessary rooms as soon as you have made up your mind.

    Al

    New trip, new questions

    1) How old are you and Mom? Are you prepared to share a bed? Where did you stay last time?

The Thompson LES has not yet opened but the LES is young and ';hip'; and may only have rooms with 1 bed.

    hotelchatter.com/story/2008/5/13/211328/166/鈥?/a>

The cheapest prices for 6 Columbus are usually for their ';pod'; rooms, excruciatingly small. You should go back and look to see if it%26#39;s for a pod room. Then do a text search here for cricri%26#39;s description of said room. This would be the most centrally located of the 3 hotels, right near the south end of Central Park.

    2) I know nothing about the Tarrytown parade, but my guess is this might have been recommended to someone with children since the Manhattan parade is definitely for adults. It%26#39;s more like a Mardi Gras parade with outrageous and sometimes lewd costumes. While a trip to Tarrytown might be nice for other reasons, I certainly wouldn%26#39;t go for their parade. For a day trip, you might look into going to Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate.

    3) If your international flight leaves at 16:30, you%26#39;d have to be at the airport at 14:30. You should allow at least 1 1/2 hrs. to get there on that day and possibly more which brings us to 12:30-13:00. The first runners usually come into Manhattan off the 59th st. bridge before then (I can%26#39;t remember exactly). It%26#39;s mile 16 of the race. Here%26#39;s a map of the course

    http://tinyurl.com/3g8wja

I think you%26#39;d have to have your luggage with you while watching there in order to make a quick getaway or you could try heading over the Queens (with luggage packed) and watching from the other side of the bridge (the E train is the subway you%26#39;d take to get to JFK).

    4) There are dozens of places for shoes (Paragon, Foot Locker, Modell%26#39;s) I think if there%26#39;s an Expo, you%26#39;d need a pass to show you were running to get in.

    5) There are literally dozens of options. Have a look thru the off the beaten path ideas from the FAQ

    In answer to #2:

The Merchants House Museum is a preserved late-19th century house in the East Village that some people believe to be haunted. Around Halloween, they do ';ghost tours'; of the house, in which they also talk about 19th century rituals regarding death and mourning. I went this past year and even though the ghost stuff is hard to swallow, the tour was very interesting and a lot of fun. Here%26#39;s their website:

    www.merchantshouse.com

If you check back in the weeks leading up to your trip, they%26#39;ll have information about the ghost tours. You have to book in advance.

I%26#39;m not sure how old your mom is or if this is the sort of thing that you%26#39;d be interested in, but there are several haunted house attractions in New York then. (Do they have these in Denmark? If not, they%26#39;re basically theme parks designed to frighten the living daylights out of you.) Here%26#39;s a website for one:

I%26#39;m meeting my two best friends (they live in other states) in New York in July to see a couple of shows, eat, and shop. We need a CLEAN, but kind of ';special'; hotel where we can treat ourselves and get away from husbands and kids!

We%26#39;re looking clean, would love a luxurious bathroom, and plenty of room to get ready (3 women in one bathroom!)

I%26#39;ve only stayed at The Sofitel (amazing!), but I would have to get two rooms there and that%26#39;s too expensive.

    Ideas anyone?

    Thanks.

    Girl's Getaway! Need a Hotel!

    What%26#39;s your budget?

    Girl's Getaway! Need a Hotel!

Well, for the three of us, maybe $450-500/night...split three ways would work.

A suite hotel in a 1 bedroom suite will have the most room. I%26#39;d check the Affinia Dumont. It%26#39;s not right near the theaters, but has 1 bedroom suites with 2 queen beds, a sofabed and views of the Empire state building. They also have an inhouse spa. The Benjamin is another Affinia suite hotel that%26#39;s nicer but no double queens, double doubles.

The Blakely is a hotel in the Times Square area with some 1 bedroom suites and the London hotel is another suite hotel nearby. Not sure about getting 2 beds there though.

    Duty free shopping at JFK?

I am traveling out of JFK to Spain and am wondering when I can do my duty free shopping. Do I have to buy on my way out of JFK an lug it to Spain with me, or can I buy it upon my return to the states. My memory cannot recall if there are duty free shops in the arrival terminal.

    Thanks!

    Duty free shopping at JFK?

You have to hand over your boarding card to buy duty free. As you hand over a portion when entering the plane you couldn%26#39;t hand it over. Also, there aren%26#39;t any duty free shops in arrivals in JFK. If transfering in Spain, keep the 100ml rule in mind if you decide to buy before leaving.

    Duty free shopping at JFK?

The idea behind duty free is that you will not be using the items in the country of purchase, so you have to take it out of the country. But there will be duty free in spain (most likely) on the way home.

There is definitely duty free in the airports in Spain.

You cant buy things in the duty free store when you arrive back in the US - you wont even have access to it - its in the departure areas, not arrivals

Hi everyone, I%26#39;m off to NY with my family in Sept 08. We are planning to stay at The Edison as it seems like a cheapish central hotel. I have decided on hotel from trip adviser reviews but if I%26#39;m making a big mistake please let me know.

Also I%26#39;d love some great tips on were to go and whats great to do. I%26#39;d recommend you all walk along the Brooklyn Bridge and see New York from the Top of the Rock.

I think Legally Blonde would be a great show for your daughter, also Hairspray is a really upbeat, fun show aswell.

For shopping go to the department store Macys - much bigger than Myer or David Jones!

A walk through Central Park would be lovely in September. I%26#39;d also recommend visiting the American Museum of Natural History - I%26#39;m not much of a museum person, but I really enjoyed it!

First Timer to NY from Australia

Hi, Faye. The Edison is ok, but it%26#39;s an older hotel. Not sure how many different rooms your group is planning to get, but if you any of you are interested in sharing a room for 4, some of the suite hotels might work out to be better/nicer. For example, the Affinia Dumont has some studio and 1 bedroom suites with 2 queen beds and these have small kitchens convenient for breakfasts, snacks and take away meals. The Courtyard Midtown East has rooms with 2 queen beds and a sofabed.

In the same area as the Edison, the Belvedere is a bit nicer and also has rooms for 4.

For a show with your daughter, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, In the Heights, even Mary Poppins. All are usually available on discount using a code from broadwaybox.com You might have to wait a bit for codes good for Sept.

    Legally Blonde

Any opinions on this musical?? good or Bad??

    Legally Blonde

I recently saw this musical with 2 teenage girls. I would say I did enjoy it, it is light and fluffy, amusing, nothing heavy, difficult or outstanding. It closely parallels the movie in storyline and feel. For a girls night out, mother/daugher it is perfect. If there are boys in the family they might prefer something else, for a couple there are many things more sophisticated. I got a good deal on broadwaybox.com

    Legally Blonde

I haven%26#39;t seen it personally, but a good friend of mine has seen it twice and said it was great. He%26#39;s a guy with two teenage daughters. All three of them loved it. He said it was funny.

How would it compare to Hairspray??

We were thinking of waiting until we got into the City to get our tickets at the TKTS Booth but I can get seats 5 rows back int he orchestra for Legally Blonde. So I am wondering if I should just get them. We were just going to go with whatever show we could get tickets for but my only fear is that there are 3 of us and we would all like to sit together!!

I saw Hairspray as well, (not with the current cast) and I would say I preferred Hairspray. It%26#39;s just a bit edgier, more mature type of musical, but still a lot of fun.

I did enjoy Legally Blonde. (more than I thought I would after watching the movie prob 3 times with daughters). I also thought it was funny.

Remind us who is in your group? That may help lean more in one direction or the other.

3 ladies all in our 30%26#39;s, first time to New York for all of us. I have seen Mamma Mia in Toronto and one of the other girls has seen Blue Man group in Toronto. So other than that we are open. Were looking to see Wicked originally but it is not looking like we are going to. should have gotten tickets alot earlier for that. So we are just happy to see something with decent seats. that is my only concern with leaving it until we get there and buying our tickets at the tkts booth. Are the seats usually ok there?

Ahhh Yankeemom and I think alike. I saw both Hairspray and Legally Blonde with my daughters this year. I also saw Hairspray when it first opened several years ago with a group of girlfriends during a girlfriend%26#39;s trip to the city. You can%26#39;t go wrong with either of these shows. My daughters preferred Legally Blonde to Hair Spray. I liked them both but would give the edge to Legally Blonde. I think the female lead, Laura Bell Bundy, does a great job ';growning'; the character throughout the show. She seems smarter and edgier than Reese Witherspoon near the end of the show.

If you have a choice of buying tickets to Legally Blonde now or waiting on line at the TKTS window for Hair Spray, I would buy the Legally Blonde tickets now. The line for TKTS can be long and wouldn%26#39;t you rather be doing something else in New York City? Perhaps a drink with the girls or shopping or visiting Central Park or anything but standing in line....

Good luck with the decision. Both are good choices. Moms

My daughter wanted to see Legally Blonde on our trip to NY in June. It wasn%26#39;t a top choice for me, and since we paid full price for Lion King, I signed up for e-mail alerts for show discounts on broadwaybox.com and playbill.com. Learned about these sights on TA, both sights are free, and a discount just became available for Legally Blonde yesterday that runs through June 29. We got great seats that worked out to be half the price (152.15 for 2 tickets including fees). I%26#39;m glad to hear that so many have enjoyed the show. I too, have watched the movie with my daughter a couple of times, so wasn%26#39;t sure if I would enjoy the musical that much.

These discount sights are great, I like broadwaybox better, because it showed you exactly where your seats would be so you could see if you liked them or not. They also show seats to avoid.

I must admit, I saw Hairspray with original cast, and who can beat Harvey Fierstein? I thought Laura Bell Bundy did a very good job as Elle, so you can%26#39;t go wrong, and if you can get discounted tickets ahead of time, I agree with not wasting your time at the TKTS booth.

  • Driving from Columbus,OH to Niagara Falls,NY

    Hi,

We are planning to drive to Niagara Falls from Columbus,OH. We are planning to start driving on Saturday and return by following Monday evening.

Can you please suggest any itinerary or any particular places that we should cover during the road travel?

Also, any suggestions on where to stay for Saturday night as the hotels/motels are pretty expensive around Niagara Falls.

Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    TM

Driving from Columbus,OH to Niagara Falls,NY

we just got back...we left on sunday after church and had one full day on monday and then got up and headed back on tuesday. and we are about a half hour to 45 min south of columbus.

we saw and did plenty in the one day we were there. we stayed in the econo lodge (not the one closest to the falls but the other one) if i were you i would stay on the canadian side or at least stay at a hotel right by the falls. parking can get expensive. however our hotel was only $59 a night so it was a good deal.

Driving from Columbus,OH to Niagara Falls,NY

Id check the Canadian rates first as they are usually more than the American. Check the hotels on Niagara Falls Blvd as they offer a free shuttle service back and forth to the Falls. The rates may be better as NF Blvd is a few miles from the Falls. We also have a campgound close by where you can pitch a tent if you like. Its about a 10-15 min drive.

Parking downtown can be expensive at about $10 a shot. Dont park at the NIagara Center (One Niagara) as he doesnt post price and sometimes you get stuck in the lot and have to pay $20. Check the city owned parking ramp across the street(attached to the Fallside Cafe) as it is sometimes free. Also across from the Days Inn is a private lot. They usually let you come in and out all day at no extra charge. Ask first though and make sure they still do it. That way you can go to various restaurants, wineries etc and not have to keep paying to park when you get back to the Falls. If you stay at a hotel here though they will offer parking.

Check this site for the best places to see and eat. Maid of the Mist is a must for everyone. WHirlpool Jet boats are pretty cool too.

Thanks a lot for your valuable tips!! I would be coming on Saturday afternoon and stay the whole of Sunday. Since its a Memorial Day weekend, any tips to beat the rush to Maid of the Mist/Cave of the winds/WhirlPool Jet etc?

    Thanks again,

if it were me id get there early when they open...course its not always the warmest then. and you would have to suffer as much as we did! lol

  • ';Park and Ride';

My husband and I are interested in driving to NYC; however, we do not want to drive into the city. We were wondering if anyone knows of a park and ride. Somewhere we could park our car for the weekend and pick up the subway or city bus.

    ';Park and Ride';

There isn%26#39;t going to be anywhere you can park and get the subway or a city bus, but there are lots of places where you could park and get a Metro-North train or a commuter/long-haul bus. Indeed, you might able to get a bus from your own hometown. Where are you coming from?

    ';Park and Ride';

Subways and city buses only run within the city limits (5 boroughs). If you%26#39;re coming from upstate, the only borough that would be convenient is the Bronx. I don%26#39;t know of any places to park there for a weekend. As Crans says, you could park somewhere along the Metro North (commuter train) route and take the train in. Here%26#39;s a link to the metro north map.

    http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/mnrmap.htm

You can click on any station and see whether they have parking for non-residents. If the objective is just to avoid driving into Manhattan, you could drive to the ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ (Port Imperial) and park there for $10/day and take the ferry into Manhattan ($7.75/person each way). Info at

    nywaterway.com

But if you%26#39;re coming on a summer weekend, I%26#39;d just drive into Manhattan and find an

    iconparking.com

    garage near your hotel.

Thank you so much for all this information. I am going to look into this. We are driving from upstate NY and yes, want to avoid driving into Manhatten.

If your criteria is ONLY taking ';city'; buses and the subway, then yes, you are limited.

If you are open to transportation other than a ';city'; bus and the subway then you have other options.

Most people who live in NYC have never even set foot in a Park and Ride as these are generally used by commuters who live outside NYC and commute.

Yes, we are open to other modes of transportation. I didn%26#39;t even think of a ferry, which is the way we may go. All I know is my husband and I am a little weary of driving in Manhattan and we really do not want to fly because it only takes us around 6 hours to drive from where we live. We are also looking to travel the cheapest way and spend our money on good food and entertainment.

We have used the ferry from Weehawken...its safe to leave your car and a nice way to get to the city. When the ferry lands in Manhattan there are a bunch of buses lined up to take you to your hotel (know the location!)

However, it is no cheaper than paying hotel parking if you are staying 2 nights or less. Plus you have to haul your stuff around.

We have found it easier to just drive in and park at an Icon garage near the hotel. Last time we paid about $50 per day. The Icon website is easy to use, you can reserve a spot for free, and print a great map to get you there. One way streets and the garage entrance are clearly noted.

Driving all the way to the ferry isn%26#39;t exactly a stress-free route. You%26#39;ll be going with the heavy traffic for the Lincoln Tunnel.

Are you coming down on Friday and leaving Monday morning? This is important to know.

Which highway would you be coming on? This is also useful to know.

hmmm....I didn%26#39;t think driving to the ferry would be crazy too. When I do a mapquest it says to take NJ-495 toward the Lincoln Tunnel. We were planning our trip for July 10-13. We would arrive early morning on Thursday, July 10th and leave late Sunday, July 13th. What are good times to drive around that area?

The exit for the ferry terminal is the last exit before you hit the helix for Lincoln Tunnel.

Traffic in that area is crazy before 10am on weekday mornings.

Traffic in that area Sunday in BOTH directions is also crazy. People returning from their weekend in the ';country';. People leaving after a day in the ';city';. It usually starts around late afternoon and does not let up until late evening.

I have found that if the cheapest way is to get a motel near the airport, Newark is the one that we stay by, pay for one night and they let you leave your car there for the week and then we take a taxi into the city.

    Hotel and parking in NYC

    Hi everybody,

Can any one tell me for a good hotel in NYC? I will travel with my family (2 teens) and i am looking for a clean and cheap (if it%26#39;s possible!!!) hotel in Manhattan. We we will travel by car so I am looking too for a place to park the car for all of our stay in the city.

    Thank%26#39;s a lot

    Hotel and parking in NYC

We have stayed at the Hampton Inn on 8th Avenue. It is right in the heart of Midtown and very convenient to all Broadway theaters. You can somtimes get a deal. It also includes breakfast each morning which to me is a big plus. Look them up at hamptoninn.com.

    Hotel and parking in NYC

The Travel Inn is the only hotel in NYC with FREE parking. It%26#39;s clean, safe, cheap and has an outdoor pool if you%26#39;re coming during the summer. The Skyline is another place that has $10/day parking, not as convenient.

I agree the Hampton Inn Times Square is another good option. If you stay there, get a garage from

    iconparking.com

near it. If the teens can%26#39;t share a bed, you might prefer a suite hotel. The Affinia.com hotels are all good.

I%26#39;m pretty sure the hotel has a discount rate with the parking garage right next door. I believe it might be an Icon garage.

boston to cooperstown to new york

my husband, daughter and son are going to boston to watch the redsox 8th July.

They are meeting me in new york and really want to go to cooperstown.

How hard is the drive from Boston to Cooperstown and then cooperstown to new york? It sounds a bit daunting to me to drive these routes especially as they are Australians, don%26#39;t know the roads /freeways at all, left hand drive etc

Is there an easier way? From my research you can train or fly from boston to albany and then maybe hire a car for the couple of days they are there and then fly or train to new york?

    any help would be appreciated

boston to cooperstown to new york

Flying would not be my choice. I would drive for sure. Albany is only about a 3 hour drive from Boston and Cooperstown is only about 2 hours from Albany. And the drive from Cooperstown to NYC is only a few hours as well.

If you have questions about routes let me know. I would be glad to help you out.

p.s. when in Cooperstown do not miss Brooks BBQ in Oneonta no trip to area is complete with out it.

Also maybe a side trip to Howe%26#39;s Cavern would be fun as well.

boston to cooperstown to new york

so you don%26#39;t think it would be difficult driving out of Boston and into New York if we haven%26#39;t driven in America before. Any help with the routes would be greatly appreciated.

It is actually pretty easy - take the Mass Turnpike (I-90) west through Massachusetts to Albany; where it becomes the New York State Thruway (still I-90 West). Take exit 25A (I-88). Once on I-88, get off at the first exit (Duanesburg/US 20) and continue east about 40 miles to County Route 31 which will take you into Cooperstown after about 10 miles.

Total time is about 4.5 hours and 250 miles.

If you haven%26#39;t already done so get reservations in Cooperstown asap. It gets very very busy in the summer. Wonderful place.

We drove from New York City to Cooperstown and back in July 2006. I think 5 hours (one way)is what I recall, although the traffic getting out of the city was very packed. Just allow for extra time as you near the city.

Dare i mention Apartment rental in NYC...Yes i have read all the forums. However, one site - nyhabitat.com has appeared as one if not the only site that is recommended. When i go on this site i am redirected to sublet.com and am very impressed with what they offer. Has anyone used them and if so do you recommend using them. Thank you all in advance.

You read correctly if you picked up on $15 for the FIRST bag, and $25 each additional. Domestic flights only; kinda makes me glad I rarely fly domestic, and if I do...it%26#39;s usually just 1 carry-on.

Time to start travelling light y'all...

I can go anywhere in a carry on, but cant do a vacation to a developing nation in a zip lock! If they would only get rid of those stupid liquid restrictions...

The problem with this is going to be increased carry on bags carried by inexperienced leisure travelers, which is going to delay boarding (the same people who cant seem to take the coins out of their pockets, or remember the 3-1-1 thing are suddenly going to have bags too!!! oy vey!)

Did you see the cover of this week%26#39;s New Yorker?

I%26#39;ve been saying this for awhile. Those terrorists are pretty smart. First they get a guy to pretend to light his shoe on fire - and we spend more money on more TSA agents to monitor the shoe removal process. Then they plant some paperwork about liquid explosives, and we get the 3-1-1 policy including beautifully printed posters for the airport and probably all sort of money spent on the marketing of 3-1-1. Not to mention the extra TSA agents to monitor the liquids and the energy expended looking for liquids instead of bombs.

Now all they need to do is have someone pretend to light their bra on fire, and we%26#39;ll be boarding in Saran Wrap! Was just discussing this an hour ago!

I just wish those so called Black Widow Chechen terrorist using babies to hide bombs when boarding planes started a no parent/baby rule!

Like people carrying on all their wordly possessions wasn%26#39;t already a problem...

Why is it airlines in other countries, even developing countries, are so superior to these awful companies?

    Quick Itinerary Review

We leave tomorrow and don%26#39;t think we have overbooked ourselves. Please comment on anything thoughts regarding our plans - TIA!

    Travelers: Mom/Dad (42), DS (10), DD (9)

Depart Thursday 3 pm, into LGA at 10:15. Cab to The Belvedere. Check-in and quick walk to TS because the kids have never been and it%26#39;s amazing at night the first time.

Friday - 10 am ';Reserve'; tickets for SOL at 10 am. Plan to leave hotel about 8, take subway down and hope to get on ferry early enough to be at SOL by 10. Do have to go to the ';will call'; window thanks (not) the statuecruises website mishap.

We might do Ellis Island, might not - see how kids are faring. Will end Friday w/stop at WTC on the way back (and a quick run into Century 21 just because we%26#39;re there and I insist) and a late afternoon lunch in Chinatown.

No real plans Friday night, maybe a later dinner at John%26#39;s and we hope to hit TOTR at some point (maybe Sat evening instead) depending on how tired we are and the weather.

Saturday - Central Park day - probably the zoo, lots of walking, lunch outside near the boat-house, maybe a bicycle rental or horse-carriage ride. Possibly a swing through Tiffany%26#39;s, FAO and a ice-cream at Serendipity. I%26#39;ve also been to a decent Japanese place that we might hit for lunch or dinner.

Sunday - boys have Yankees game at 1:05 and want to go early for batting practice, DD and I have Wicked at 2. We%26#39;ll all meet up at the hotel for dinner (might do Bella Vita or John%26#39;s) and walking around TS again.

Sunday - hoping for brunch at Film Center Cafe, boys head back to the Yankee Stadium for the tour while DD and I head down to TJ Maxx/Filene%26#39;s, Macy%26#39;s, etc.

Monday - flight isn%26#39;t until 3:55 so we%26#39;ll do some additional wandering about, shopping, etc before heading to airport.

I think this is enough to give the kids a taste of NYC (TS, Chinatown, WTC, SOL, CP, etc.). We might try to fit in some Fleet Week activities (tour) depending on how we hold up.

This is totally unscheduled by my definitions, but I know my kids and over-scheduling leads to tired, stressed out everyone.

    Quick Itinerary Review

Looks good to me. You might want to consider renting a boat on the lake in Central Park - in addition to, or instead of, your bike rental/carriage ride. Think the kids would enjoy it:

    thecentralparkboathouse.com/sections/boats.h鈥?/a>

    Quick Itinerary Review

Sorry about the Statue Cruises thing. I think I%26#39;ll be apologizing for that one for a while. ;( You might want to consider doing TOTR during daylight since you can%26#39;t see Central Park at night (it%26#39;s not lit).

Very long waits at Serendipity and not all that great. If you leave your name, you could walk over to the Roosevelt Island tram and take a roundtrip ride for views. Costs the same as a subway or bus ride.

Myabe consider discount tickets to an off Broadway show Fri. night? Stomp? Altar Boyz? Sounds like a great trip. Hope you have a blast.

If the row boats are available, that is fun to do in Central Park. I think that is cheaper than a carriage ride and still a lovely park activity.

The last time I did a Fleet Week visit to a ship the lines were very long. Best to get there early, wear sunscreen, bring water, hats etc...

That looks like a great, non-intimidating itinerary!! Have fun :)

  • Romantic Getaway OUTSIDE of NYC?

We live in NYC so we%26#39;re looking for something upstate (short driving distance of 2 hours) or even in Long Island near the beaches for a romantic 2 night getaway this summer. Can anyone suggest one? Thanks in advance!

    Romantic Getaway OUTSIDE of NYC?

If you like the beach, there are some lovely B%26amp;B%26#39;s on the Jersey Shore...Spring Lake comes to mind:-) Enjoy!

i would recommend the northwest corner of Connecticut....you won%26#39;t have that awful LI beach traffic and although you won%26#39;t have ocean, the lakes are beautiful and some of the lake beaches are very pleasant.....look at inns in Lakeville, Sharon, Salisbury (a lot of B%26amp;B%26#39;s and some old inns); if you truly want ocean only, take a look at the Ct. shore...beaches aren%26#39;t as brilliant as LI but the traffic is a whole lot better and the lobsters are better! The Northwest corner is about a two hour drive, the shore drive could take you two and a half

I%26#39;ll second the Catskills and Litchfield County, CT. New Jersey and Long Island aren%26#39;t the first two places to come to mind when I%26#39;m thinking romance.

    NW corner of Ct.

    http://www.manorhouse-norfolk.com/

    http://www.mayflowerinn.com/home_inn.shtml

    http://www.bouldersinn.com/

On Long Island, consider Shelter Island or maybe Sag Harbor. New Hope, Pa and Lambertville, NJ are very pretty but not sure what there is to do in summer. If you%26#39;re foodies, maybe a stay near Hyde Park and the Culinary Institute would be nice.

Within two hours of NYC I second “nywhiz’s” recommendation of the Mayflower Inn. The inn is a Relais %26amp; Chateaux property located in Washington, CT. We’ve had several memorable dinners there and the surroundings are beautiful. A little more than 2 hours away from NYC is another wonderful Relais %26amp; Chateaux property - the Castle Hill Inn %26amp; Resort in Newport, RI ( www.castlehillinn.com ). My parents stayed in the turret Suite last year and raved about it.

Both of these are great, but are over $500 per night for rooms in the summer......one can have a great time in NW Ct (or RI but no way can you drive to Newport in under three hours from the city in the summer!) in a B%26amp;B or Inn for less than half of that.......and it can still be romantic and wonderful....personally i would rather spend the money on anything but a $500 hotel room

  • Booked tickets for Spamalot

    Hello experts.

Looking for recommendations for dinner before we go to Spamalot on June 22 at 7 pm.

Heard lots about Carmines? Italian would be great.

Also should we go before or after the show?

    Thanks in advance.

    Shelley

    Booked tickets for Spamalot

Carmines serves huge portions, so if there are fewer than 4 of you, you won%26#39;t be able to finish the meal.

I like Maria Pia and Bella Vita. Have a look on www.menupages.com for addresses and reviews.

    Booked tickets for Spamalot

Depending on the person, Carmine%26#39;s can get hot and cold reviews. :)

Personally, when I ate there I liked it a lot. Not the best Italian I%26#39;ve ever had, but good, and plenty of it for a reasonable price.

    But there are some caveats:

First - the portions are huge, so unless you are a group of four or larger it%26#39;s not a place I would go.

Second - I don%26#39;t think they take reservations for less than four people (not at all?) and they are usually pretty busy before and after a show.

So, unless you have more than 2 people, I%26#39;d avoid Carmine%26#39;s.

However, I%26#39;m sure you will get plenty of other recommendations for Italian in and near the theater district.

Just saw Spamalot on Saturday with our three teenage boys. Went to Angus McIndoes (SP?)Just a few doors down from the theatre. Great! I had great fish hubby had fabulous veal and the boys had chicken and pasta dishes. Had calamari for apperizers. Wine for us and beer for the boys.dinner for all came to about 200 dollars. The food was fabulous and you couldn%26#39;t be closer to the theatre..Have fun you will love Spamalot!!

Whether to eat before or after is really up to you and your other plans for the day. You%26#39;d have to eat at about 5 to make the show. Since it%26#39;s a Sunday, you might have brunch and not be hungry then. OR, you might get up early, have breakfast and enjoy an early dinner.

I agree Carmine%26#39;s is really best for 4 or more and more importantly, you should have a reservation. John%26#39;s pizzeria is also on the same block as the restaurant (not sure about reservations). Trattoria Trecolori is an Italian that%26#39;s well liked that%26#39;s nearby too.

Try Becco (http://becco-nyc.com) on resaurant row (46th between 8th and 9th). They have a reasonably priced amazing all you can eat pasta special. I would probobly eat before the show.

    Dinner before or after show

Hi all first time posting. My husband and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary in NYC, my question is; we will be flying into JFK on July 8th early afternoon (in a perfect world with no flight delays) we have tickets to Wicked that night at 7:00 p.m. Should I try to make dinner reservations before the show or after? Or should I not worry about reservations and just see how the day progresses. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

    Dinner before or after show

    Welcome to the forum!

How early is ';early afternoon';? I probably wouldn%26#39;t book something before the show. Between the possibility of delays and the time it takes to get your luggage, get to your hotel, check in, etc., you might not want the pressure of making it to a restaurant at a specific time.

Here%26#39;s a page on Theater District dining from the FAQ for some ideas:

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60763-c62725/New-Yor鈥?/a>

    Dinner before or after show

It depends on what time you%26#39;re used to eating. You%26#39;d have to eat at 5 to be at the show on time. If that%26#39;s a time you%26#39;d prefer to eat (the show is long so you won%26#39;t get out until 10 or so) plan to eat before. You can make a reservation and cancel it if you%26#39;re running late or decide to just grab a light bite on the run (maybe some appetizers with drinks at a nice bar) and have some dessert after.

2:00 p.m. is the estimated arrival time, I think maybe a light bite before, might be the ticket. We are so excited about this trip, we have never done anything like this before. We%26#39;ve been so busy with work and kids etc. and now both kids are off on their own adventures, so we decided it is our turn. Thanks for your kind suggestions.

Depends on food response. If you get sleepy after dining, have a light salad before the show and protein/carbs afterward. If none of this matters to you, eat when is right for you and enjoy the show!

Hi, i am arriving at JFK airport from London Stanstead on Friday 27th June at 12pm(ish). I am thinking of booking a party shuttle tour of New York City for 3pm. Do you think it is possible for me to get through customs and get baggage etc and get to the hotel and book in in time for the tour?? I have booked transport from JFK to The Time hotel already.

    Thanks.

Estimated time JFK to time square (the time hotel)

I wouldn%26#39;t. If the plane is delayed, can you get the tickets refunded? I don%26#39;t think you can. You could do the New York Lights tour which is in the evening. It would also give you time to rest up a little.

Estimated time JFK to time square (the time hotel)

Agree totally with Cozz. The slightest delay will make you miss the tour. Unless they tell you you can take the next one or change to the following day w/o a problem, I%26#39;d book a different one.

Snikki - I stayed at The Time Hotel last summer for a week. I loved the hotel. There is a little Italian restaurant right next door. They have the best Fettuccine Carbanara! We eat there now everytime we go back. So, four times now. If you get a chance, you may want to try it......... :o)

What transport have you booked, if a car service, almost certainly not, if a shuttle bus (supershuttle) then certainly not.

Hi !thank you all for the replies!I will book the tour for the next day as it wont be such a rush! I will definately try the italian next to the Time hotel!

I wouldn%26#39;t do the party shuttle!I did this 2 years ago and I thought it was total garbage and not worth the then $60USD I paid for it.I found the bus to be too small(and very hard to take photograph%26#39;s from), the guide was terrible and when we went to staten island he almost lost the whole group! We went to some crappy little seaport for lunch and weren%26#39;t able to get off and take pictures of any of the major sights(apart from Strawberry fields and I think that was like 5mins!).Save your money and do one of the other bus tours!

Waiting in Line at ABC Lincoln

    For The View- next week....

My mom is 79 and cannot stand in line, Are there seats, or a coffe shop nearby where she can sit, while I wait in line?

Waiting in Line at ABC Lincoln

When I waited in line there 3 years ago, there was no place to sit while in line. There isn%26#39;t much around there, but there was a food cart at the end of the street if you needed a snack. Maybe you could bring a portable folding seat for her? I know they wouldn%26#39;t let you take it in with you, but maybe they could hold it at the check-in area for you.

8 days in NYC- Split it up? Boston or...?

I%26#39;m in washington DC for a week for training. I booked an extra week, thinking I could go to New York as well. I haven%26#39;t booked flights, but I%26#39;ll likely be there Satu-Saturday. is 8 days too much for New York? I was thinking I could do Boston as well, or go somewhere else.

I%26#39;d like to experience the east coast, as I%26#39;m from Vancouver. Mostly into history...not museums so much, but the town%26#39;s themselves. The cape soudns amazing. Any suggestions? I%26#39;d like to make the most of my stay, but don%26#39;t want to try and do too much.

I%26#39;ll be taking the amtrak from Washington to NY, which is 3.5 hours. I was thinking I could do the same to Boston, and fly home from there.

Also, I%26#39;m open to renting a car (ie to go to Cape Cod). Please, suggestions would be helpful!!

8 days in NYC- Split it up? Boston or...?

I was going to say stick with NY for the 8 days - there is SO much to do here - until I read that you love the history of the cities themselves. I think you%26#39;ll love Boston and all it has to offer, especially the Freedom Trail. I therefore think you should do 4 nights in NY and 3 in Boston.

8 days in NYC- Split it up? Boston or...?

I agree with Kate about the split.

I know you said you%26#39;re not a museum person, but it would be a shame to miss the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is the largest museum in the Western Hemisphere and the single most visited attraction in NYC. It has fantastic Egyptian, Greek/Roman, and Arms and Armor collections that are very appealing to people more interested in history than art. More here:

When you%26#39;re in New York, be sure to check out the New York Historical Society museum:

And the Lower East Side Tenement Museum:

All of which sound like they%26#39;d be perfect for you.

My family are coming to the states in the summer. We are staying 4 days DC, 6 days NYC and 6 days Boston. There is loads to do in each city, and although you could easily fill all 8 days in NYC you will find some really great history in and around Boston - it%26#39;s accessible by train or bus. Why not go to the TA pages on Boston (but don%26#39;t get distracted by DC or Philadelphia or you will have just too many choices :))

If you have a car you could spend time in NYC, drive out to the North Fork of Long Island, catch the ferry from Orient Point to New London, drive over to Cape Cod, take the ferry from Provincetown to Boston and spend the rest of your trip there. You%26#39;ll get the best of both cities plus get to see a little bit of what the East Coast and Southern New England is all about.

Or you could do this a little ';backwards';...drive from New York City to Boston, take the ferry from Boston to Provincetown...then back to Boston to fly home.

You won%26#39;t need a car in Ptown for the day to explore this great little town, but you would need a car to venture out from Provincetown.

What time of year were you planning your trip? I am not a fan of Provincetown in the winter months but in-season lodging arrangements for the Cape (if you wanted to stay overnight before heading back to Boston)are expensive enough and need to be secured in advance.

I%26#39;ll be there end of July. That actually sounds great- I like the idea of renting a car, and driving to Boston. The route you painted sounds terrific- taking the ferry off Long Island, stopping in providence... I think i might like to End in Boston, rather than go there first and hit provincetown. That way I can relax at the end of the trip and just take in the city.

The ferries that you take, are they more expensive if I%26#39;m driving a car? Also, end of July- will I have trouble finding a place to stay the night if I leave it last minute? I would LOVE to just wing it and stop wherever I felt like it.

No cars on the ferries to Ptown...(no way the Wharf in Ptown could handle loading/off-loading cars!).

You won%26#39;t need a car in Provincetown. Do visit the Cape Cod forum for information about lodging in Ptown. I promise you, you will have a terribly difficult time finding a room for only One night in season.

The ferry only takes 90 minutes: If you leave Boston early in the a.m. you can then plan to visit Ptown during the day, (you can do the Dune Tours or a whale watch), have dinner at Edwige, and then head back to Boston in the evening.

Also, head over to the Boston Forum on TA for more information or itineraries for day trips to the Cape from Boston. It%26#39;ll be a long, fascinating day!
