First Timer to NY from Australia

Hi everyone, I%26#39;m off to NY with my family in Sept 08. We are planning to stay at The Edison as it seems like a cheapish central hotel. I have decided on hotel from trip adviser reviews but if I%26#39;m making a big mistake please let me know.

Also I%26#39;d love some great tips on were to go and whats great to do. There are 6 of us, my mum %26amp; Dad (early 60%26#39;s), my sister, her hubby and me (early to late 30%26#39;s) and my daughter who is 12. We plan on all doing differant things so prob wont do all the sight seeing together.

I%26#39;d also love to take my daughter to see a show, any recommendations... maybe Legally Blonde?

Have seen Lion king and Mamma Mia here.

Would love any advice you can give me.

Faye

I%26#39;d recommend you all walk along the Brooklyn Bridge and see New York from the Top of the Rock.

I think Legally Blonde would be a great show for your daughter, also Hairspray is a really upbeat, fun show aswell.

For shopping go to the department store Macys - much bigger than Myer or David Jones!

A walk through Central Park would be lovely in September. I%26#39;d also recommend visiting the American Museum of Natural History - I%26#39;m not much of a museum person, but I really enjoyed it!

Hi, Faye. The Edison is ok, but it%26#39;s an older hotel. Not sure how many different rooms your group is planning to get, but if you any of you are interested in sharing a room for 4, some of the suite hotels might work out to be better/nicer. For example, the Affinia Dumont has some studio and 1 bedroom suites with 2 queen beds and these have small kitchens convenient for breakfasts, snacks and take away meals. The Courtyard Midtown East has rooms with 2 queen beds and a sofabed.

In the same area as the Edison, the Belvedere is a bit nicer and also has rooms for 4.

For a show with your daughter, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, In the Heights, even Mary Poppins. All are usually available on discount using a code from broadwaybox.com You might have to wait a bit for codes good for Sept.

Here%26#39;s a link to the FAQ with tons of good info including trip reports from families with teens which you might read.

Thanks, so much for your help, Im so glad I asked for advice. The shows you have recommended sound great. We are staying in 3 seperate rooms,my mum %26amp; dad in 1rm, sis %26amp; hubby in 2nd rm %26amp; my daughter %26amp; I in 3rd rm.

We have stayed at the Hampton Inn on 8th Ave. (www.hamptoninn.com. Nice rooms with queen size beds which includes breakfast each morning.

Try a visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You might also want to go to the top of the Empire State building.
