';Park and Ride';

My husband and I are interested in driving to NYC; however, we do not want to drive into the city. We were wondering if anyone knows of a park and ride. Somewhere we could park our car for the weekend and pick up the subway or city bus.

';Park and Ride';

There isn%26#39;t going to be anywhere you can park and get the subway or a city bus, but there are lots of places where you could park and get a Metro-North train or a commuter/long-haul bus. Indeed, you might able to get a bus from your own hometown. Where are you coming from?

';Park and Ride';

Subways and city buses only run within the city limits (5 boroughs). If you%26#39;re coming from upstate, the only borough that would be convenient is the Bronx. I don%26#39;t know of any places to park there for a weekend. As Crans says, you could park somewhere along the Metro North (commuter train) route and take the train in. Here%26#39;s a link to the metro north map.

You can click on any station and see whether they have parking for non-residents. If the objective is just to avoid driving into Manhattan, you could drive to the ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ (Port Imperial) and park there for $10/day and take the ferry into Manhattan ($7.75/person each way). But if you%26#39;re coming on a summer weekend, I%26#39;d just drive into Manhattan and find an

garage near your hotel.

Thank you so much for all this information. I am going to look into this. We are driving from upstate NY and yes, want to avoid driving into Manhatten.

If your criteria is ONLY taking ';city'; buses and the subway, then yes, you are limited.

If you are open to transportation other than a ';city'; bus and the subway then you have other options.

Most people who live in NYC have never even set foot in a Park and Ride as these are generally used by commuters who live outside NYC and commute.

Yes, we are open to other modes of transportation. I didn%26#39;t even think of a ferry, which is the way we may go. All I know is my husband and I am a little weary of driving in Manhattan and we really do not want to fly because it only takes us around 6 hours to drive from where we live. We are also looking to travel the cheapest way and spend our money on good food and entertainment.

We have used the ferry from Weehawken...its safe to leave your car and a nice way to get to the city. When the ferry lands in Manhattan there are a bunch of buses lined up to take you to your hotel (know the location!)

However, it is no cheaper than paying hotel parking if you are staying 2 nights or less. Plus you have to haul your stuff around.

We have found it easier to just drive in and park at an Icon garage near the hotel. Last time we paid about $50 per day. The Icon website is easy to use, you can reserve a spot for free, and print a great map to get you there. One way streets and the garage entrance are clearly noted.

Driving all the way to the ferry isn%26#39;t exactly a stress-free route. You%26#39;ll be going with the heavy traffic for the Lincoln Tunnel.

Are you coming down on Friday and leaving Monday morning? This is important to know.

Which highway would you be coming on? This is also useful to know.

hmmm....I didn%26#39;t think driving to the ferry would be crazy too. When I do a mapquest it says to take NJ-495 toward the Lincoln Tunnel. We were planning our trip for July 10-13. We would arrive early morning on Thursday, July 10th and leave late Sunday, July 13th. What are good times to drive around that area?

The exit for the ferry terminal is the last exit before you hit the helix for Lincoln Tunnel.

Traffic in that area is crazy before 10am on weekday mornings.

Traffic in that area Sunday in BOTH directions is also crazy. People returning from their weekend in the ';country';. People leaving after a day in the ';city';. It usually starts around late afternoon and does not let up until late evening.

I have found that if the cheapest way is to get a motel near the airport, Newark is the one that we stay by, pay for one night and they let you leave your car there for the week and then we take a taxi into the city.
