I was reading another post about travelling with a toddler and now I am reconsidering something. I have booked a shuttle from Newark Airport to Manhattan for my husband and I. I called the shuttle and they said that they do not provide car seats but that my son can sit it our lap. I%26#39;m ok with that for the infrequent taxi trips we may take, but does concern me on a long trip from the airport. I looked into using the train from the airport, but we would have to take 2 trains and the bus to get to our destination. It will take an hour and a half to get there. Should I just stick with the shuttle or will the mass transit be ok? We%26#39;ll also have a stroller and lots of luggage in tow.

Where are you staying and where does the first train take you? To Penn Station? Could you take a taxi from there?

We are staying at the Shelburne Murray Hill so the train drops us off at Penn station. We could definitely get a taxi from there.
I think you%26#39;ll be fine with that short taxi ride from Penn Station to your hotel - it%26#39;s only a few blocks and it%26#39;s crosstown, so the car will be going at about three miles an hour.
dont you need a car seat for the plane?
Don%26#39;t take the shuttle; it takes forever. To use the train from Newark the first train of which you speak is actually just a monorail that is a means of getting from terminal to terminal to parking to the airport train station. The New Jersey Transit train is an actual commuter train that will take you to New York Penn Station. Be sure to go all the way to New York; you don%26#39;t want to get off at Newark Penn Station. From New York Penn Station you could take a taxi to your hotel.

A taxi from Newark would be the same (more or less) cost as the shuttle, but I can certainly understand if you wouldn%26#39;t want to hold your son on your lap for the ride all the way into the city.
I took the train from Newark a few weeks ago. I was on my own but I%26#39;m planning (hoping for!) a return trip with my 5 and 2 year old in the near future so was keeping an eye on things like this.
The train station is linked to the airport terminals by an elevated monorail which I imagine most kids would enjoy.
After that, the train journey is pretty easy and straightforward. Took about 20/25 mins.
I would be happier with my two boys on the train to Penn Station and then a short taxi ride than a journey on the motorway/expressway/busy road/whatever you call it in a shuttle or a taxi.
although it sounds to me like the child could be sitting on the lap the whole way from Portland? I hope your husband is in the seat next to you so you can pass him back and forth!
I just asked a similar question, as we are thinking about bringing our toddler later this year - but we have 2 other children, so it%26#39;s looking a little overwhelming getting everyone to/from the airport ;)
I have taken the train from Newark to Penn Station, and it truly could not be simpler!
Thanks for all of the responses! It%26#39;s true, he will be on our laps for the flight from Portland. :) Sounds like the train is the way to go. Now I just have to see if I can get a refund for these shuttle tickets.
