Downtown/City Hall

I was running over to Staples before lunch to grab some supplies, when I overheard some tourists... one of them was pointing out City Hall... ';that tall building, there!'; ';really? that%26#39;s city hall? it%26#39;s huge!';

Only problem is, they were pointing at the Stalin-inspiring, ';wedding-cake'; style tower which is, in fact, THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING. Not City Hall. An awesome building in its own right, but much younger than, and most definitely not, City Hall.

City hall is the small, domed building in the middle of City Hall Park.

Don%26#39;t feel bad, though. Plenty of New Yorkers seem to make the same mistake. Case in point, the local who helpfully chimed in, at the end of the scene i described, ';Yeah! And da mayuh%26#39;s office is at da top!';

Just a pet peeve of mine... like the people who gaze respectfully at what they think is Ground Zero... but is actually the construction site where the 6-story tall Customs Building used to be.

dave - there was a post yesterday, trip report I think, where the poster said from his hotel he had a great view of the ESB - however one of the astute and long time Forum members figured that from his location he was actually viewing the Chrysler building - easy to mix up if you%26#39;re not really familiar with the city, I reckon.

Where is that exactly? I recall the U. S. Customs Office being in WTC Building #6 or #7, and the original Customs House is now the Museum of the American Indian...

Are you talking about the construction site on Fulton and B%26#39;way?

and you can tour the ';real'; City Hall (it takes about an hour and is very interesting at least IMO) but you must book it well in advance. See link';

QB, sorry, yeah, I meant WTC 6, not the old classic one! :-)
