Buffalo-Niagara surrounding area

Flying into Buffalo for the period 6/2-6/7/08. Planning to spend 6/2-6/3/08 at Niagara and Niagara on the Lake. Our first time in the area. Looking to travel outside of the area from 6/4-6/6/08 and don%26#39;t know the area at all. We like the outdoors, hiking and historical sites - mixed with fun. Would like to find another area to stay for at least 2 nights. Don%26#39;t mind a drive of 2-4 hours to get there? Any suggestions?

Suggest 1) Letchworth State Park, about 90 minutes from Buffalo. It is a beautiful park with great hiking! Deep canyon with multiple waterfalls. There are a number of options for accomodations in the park and food establishments. 2) Allegheney State Park -- about 2 hours from Buffalo.

With your mention on interest in the historical sites, while in the Niagara Region, suggest you visit Old Fort Niagara, Lewiston, NY (Believe built in 1737) and Ft. George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Both Forts played significant roles int he War of 1812.

You may want to consider the Chatauqua Institution for a stay. Very historic site with nice accomodations an a lakefront setting. Many great options for day tripping in the area as well.

I would suggest looking into some of the bed and breakfasts rather then the Chautauqua institute (if you go that route). The Chautauqua institute is truly ';period'; with all that entails (no air etc). The website does list to some B%26amp;Bs http://www.ciweb.org/accom.html

If you like to hike here is a link to NYS parks http://nysparks.state.ny.us/regions/ Regions 11, 12 %26amp; 13 would be quite close. Parts of regions 10 (the Finger Lakes) would be well within 4 hours. Here is a link to the Finger Lakes B%26amp;Bs:

A nice side trip if you head down that way is to visit Corning. The glass works is very interesting, there is a discount corning outlet about a mile away, and right down the street from the outlet is a cute little main street with glass artisans.

If you head towards Rochester, there is the Genesse Country Village http://www.gcv.org/

Here is an interesting website that lists things to do in WN:
