Day trips from New York to pretty coastal towns

Hello i have just booked my flight to my favourite city in the world new york new york. i will be staying in somers in new york for 10 days at the end of june. it is around 50 mins north of manhattan on the train.

can anyone recommend any day trips i could go on? i have been to new york so many times and would like to vist a few other places this time. i dont want to stay overnight anywhere, just somewhere i can go for the day and get back to nyc/then somers at night.

i like beaches and shops but more importantly just want to see some good bits of this beautiful country. i dont really want to go to a really touristy place.

is greenwich a good idea? do i have to go all the way into nyc to then get there? or can i get there from further north eg white plains? how long is it from ncy to greenwich on a train?

has anyone got any other ideas of places i could visit?

im a single female 33 yrs travelling alone but staying with friend in somers. ta

many thanks

Check out the NY State tourism site:

Suffolk County to our east is home to the celebrated Hamptons, and the less-upscale fishing town of Montauk - ';the end'; at the tip of Long Island. A very, very crowded drive on the weekends. Try to go mid-week.

You can also go ';down the shore'; - which means south down the coast of New Jersey. Check out gentirfying Asbury Park, kid-friendly Long Beach Island, trashy-glitzy Atlantic City, or all the way down to peaceful Cape May.

Greenwich, CT is not what I think you%26#39;re after. It%26#39;s a very upscale upper-class town, not beautiful countryside or seafaring fishing.

What about Newport, R.I., for their fancy marinas? I%26#39;ve never been, but it sounds so lovely.

Newport is a great idea, but how about Mystic Seaport? It%26#39;s a bit closer.

Will you be renting a car? It would be silly to go into the city to get to Northern CT or Rhode Island.

Somers is 1 1/2 hrs. north of Manhattan and will not be conducive to day trips unless you drive. The way the transit system works is it%26#39;s designed to transport people into Manhattan from various places, not so much between various places. Here%26#39;s a Metro North train map.

There are three train stations serving Somers: Croton Falls station, Purdys station, and Goldens Bridge station.

The towns south of Somers on the train, including Katonah, Bedford Hills, Mt. Kisco and Chapaqua are all lovely, but not beach towns. If you had a car you could head west to the towns along the Hudson River. It%26#39;s a pretty area.
