My wife %26amp; I are going to be driving from Syracuse to Ottawa in July, and would like to find a place to stay in the Adirondacks for a couple of nights. Would prefer someplace less crowded than say Lake Placid, and not outrageously expensive (ie I saw one place that started at $350/night). Any recommendations for a place to stay?
Adirondack's advice needed
Direct route from Syracuse to Ottawa is up interstate 81.....bypassing the Adirondacks...so I take it you want to do a side trip for a day or two?
Adirondack's advice neededExactly, we have a couple of extra days, so we were looking to spend a couple of nights somewhere in the Adirondacks.
If you%26#39;ll check out the OLD FORGE forum, there is a local who use to respond to questions regarding the Adirondacks. I think he%26#39;d have some good suggestions.
But I%26#39;ll take a shot.....
You could drive to UTICA via the NYS Thruway, pickup up route 12N to 28N to OLD FORGE (2 hrs from Syracuse with NO traffic). OLD FORGE is less crowded than Lake Placid. Scenery is not as dramatic because your not in the high peaks. There is certainly plenty of accommodations. Google OLD FORGE NY....they have a website.
Further up 28N you%26#39;ll find Raquette Lake (another 30 mins or so). They have a cruise boat on Raquette that does dinner cruises etc. There is GREAT CAMP SAGAMORE which you can tour.
Further still...Blue Mountain lake. Limited in accommodations. About 20 mins beyond Raquette. Has my favorite museum...The Adirondack Museum. Great place to visit. They have a website.
Going further north still...Tupper Lake. About 1hr above Blue Mountain. New museum there on the Natural History of the Adirondacks. Have not been. Should be more plentiful in accommodations than Blue Mountain. And from Tupper, you could head back on route 3 to Watertown to meet up with 81N again .... but ... there%26#39;s other routes as well.
Other than route 12N, 28N and 30N .... I%26#39;m unfamilar with road conditions. Traffic can be heavy on weekends and 28N and 30N are still only 2 lanes.
Unfortunately, I can%26#39;t provide much help with hotels/motels etc. I have a camp in the Adirondacks and rarely look for accommodations.
Good luck.
I recommend Saranac Lake; it is 8 miles from Lake Placid but much more relaxed and laid back. It is also less expensive. Other places I%26#39;d suggest are Inlet, Long Lake and Speculator. I%26#39;m personally not a fan of Old Forge or Tupper Lake.
The Adirondack Museum (Blue Mtn Lake) and the Sagamore Great Camp (Raquette Lake) are worth checking out.
Here is a place I always wanted to try.....The Hedges.

Reviews are always favorable. It%26#39;s in Blue Mountain.
