Dartmouth House

I%26#39;ve read the favorable reviews on Dartmouth House. Any other comments from you good TA folks before we book our stay?

Dartmouth House

Ha ha. I never heard of it. It%26#39;s in a nice neighborhood though. I%26#39;d go for it. Be sure to report back!!!

Dartmouth House

According to Frommers, it claims to be the only B%26amp;B in Rochester with central air.

So, Carmen, you rate this as a ';nice neighborhood.'; That%26#39;s good because my husband and I enjoy walking. George Eastman House is less than a mile away, so we may walk there on Sunday. What else specifically can we enjoy on foot in the neighborhood?

I%26#39;ve recently been to a lot of restaurants in this section of town (recently=this week) and there are definitely a lot things to see on foot. There%26#39;s a lot of neat little stores. When my schedule gets a little less hectic and the weather is nice on weekends and such, I%26#39;ll probably take a walk down in this area.

Just went to Martini Grille last night (know this post isn%26#39;t about restaurants, but I%26#39;ll mention it anyway) and had a nice meal. It%26#39;s on South Goodman, right between Park %26amp; Monroe (same general area as the Dartmouth House.) Small place, slower service, but good service. We weren%26#39;t in a rush, so it was fine for us, we could tell the server was swamped. Had a lovely time and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Kat, I welcome your Martini Grille review and any other suggestions for the neighborhood.

We%26#39;ve booked two nights at Dartmouth House. Grand 1905 English Tudor...located in the heart of the historic and cultural Park Avenue/East Avenue district...neighborhood with array of turn-of-the century architectural gems....walk to cafes, boutiques, booksellers, restaurants, shops, museums...even WiFi. Sounds like just the spot for us.

This is located in a very nice, residential neighborhood. Many single family homes and many grand old homes that are now apartments. Great restaurants all along Park Avenue. Monroe Avenue is a bit more eclectic. More tattoo joints and bars than you%26#39;ll find on Park Ave.

At the corner of Park and Goodman Street is a wonderful gift shop called Parkleigh Pharmacy. Highly recommend it. Great coffee/sandwich shop across the street. Good restaurant next door, Hogan%26#39;s Hideaway.

Good restaurants/cafes at the corner of Park and Berkeley (Jines, Camille%26#39;s, Charlie%26#39;s Frog Pond). Also some nicer places for lunch or dinner on the other corner. Nice restaurant in the Strathallan Inn on East Avenue near the George Eastman House.

If you like independent films, go to The Little Theater on East Avenue in the East End (just west of Eastman House). Great food at the theater for before the show.

In the summer, there will be mobs of people in these areas on the weekend. If you like waterfront places, take a ride north to Lake Ontario (about 15 minutes from Park Avenue). Several places on the water on both the west side of the Genesee River (Pelican%26#39;s Nest) and the east side of the river (O%26#39;Loughlin%26#39;s and Schooners). Lots of boats pulled up. Grab lunch and a cold one.

Wow! So many appealing options right in the Dartmouth House neighborhood! It may be challenging to decide what to do when. Our trip was sparked by an interest in catching the American Impressionism exhibit at the MAG, and I know we want to spend time at George Eastman House, too, and RPO Showhouse/Ellwanger Garden...and Highland Park. We%26#39;ll arrive Saturday afternoon and leave Monday afternoon and definitely will want to allot time to exploring the neighborhood. Even with all my research for a trip, sometimes the most memorable elements are those serendipitous finds.

When it comes to hospitality, Ellie and Bill are naturals, and their B%26amp;B, a 1902 English Tudor (where Ellie%26#39;s lived since 1947 as the second of two owners)on Dartmouth, was a good fit for us...an elegant breakfast table and exceptional multi-course menu, including, in part, cinnamon apples and peach French toast one day, Dutch baby with a peach/turkey sausage sauce the other and Italian ice and a bit of homemade dessert on both...quiet and walkable neighborhood. A couple drawbacks, but overall we were pleased with our choice.
