Idle question - what happened to the Drake hotel?

My recent visit to New York City prompted recollections of a couple of vacations many years ago when I stayed at the Drake hotel. I think it was on the east side, on one of the 50%26#39;s streets. I know it no longer exists, but wondered if there is a new hotel in its place or if some other business is located there. I liked the Drake, too bad it is gone.

It%26#39;s still on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, where it%26#39;s always been: http://www.thedrakehotel.com/

I kid, I kid... Do you mean the Drake at 56th and Park Avenue? This one:

That%26#39;s a good question. It is (or was, maybe) called the Swissotel The Drake New York in recent years, but if you go to the Swissotel website, there is no mention of a hotel in New York City. So now I%26#39;m curious. Maybe a local New Yorker can shed some light on the mystery: is this hotel still a hotel? If so, is it still known as the Drake, or is it now under the management of someone else?

As I recall the Drake it was a place where ';quiet money';

stayed when they came to Manhattan. I do not know where

they go now. Where did you stay this time?

Within the past year or so the Drake, at 56th and Park, was razed to the ground. It will be a new hotel, or condo development. The developer, the Macklowe Organization, apparently hopes to combine that prime corner with a series of small retail brownstones, located on 57th street, to form a major shopping and biziness venue. It would, thus, be a property in the shape of an ';L.'; However, due to the credit crunch, and other issues, the project seems to be in danger of falling apart, or so it is reported.

It was a nice hotel, great location. Sad to have seen it go.

SoBeAddict, I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria the last time I visited. Thanks everyone for your responses. I had wondered for a while what happened to the Drake and now my curiosity is assuaged.
