My family and I (2 adults and 2 kids ages 9 and 10) are staying in DC but want to take a day trip to New York. We are looking at Bolt Bus, which has cheaper tickets. It would drop us off at 33rd and 7th, if that%26#39;s any help, at 11:30 am and leave at 8:00 pm. I want to know what we could see that is meaningful in one day. I%26#39;m not interested in spending a lot of money, just really some site seeing. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
What to see in NYC in one dayIf the weather is nice you can walk around for eight hours. YOu can walk up 7th Avenue from 33rd Street through Times Square. You can walk up to Central Park.
You might want to swing over to Ninth Avenue for an inexpensive lunch. Maybe Mexican at Arriba Arriba, any one of the Thai places, tons of inexpensive great restaurants on Ninth Avenue. Walk around Central Park, up to Bethesda Fountain and the Boat House.
Following the 72nd Street transverse you can walk either west to the Upper West Side or east to the Upper East Side. This will take between 3 and 5 hours to cover this. You may want to jump on the subway (either the 1,2,3 at 72nd / Broadway or the 6 train at 68th Street / Lexington Avenue down to 14th Street and explore a little bit of the Union Square / Greenwich Village area before walking back up 7th Avenue through Chelsea to 33rd Street.
Otherwise, you might want to go to Ground Zero or you might want to go to Battery Park and see the Statue of Liberty. Or you might want to walk east along 33rd Street to the Empire State Building and turn north on Fifth Avenue past the Lord and Taylor, the New York Public Library and have lunch in Bryant Park.
Maybe you want to see the U.N. or Grand Central. You may have your heart set on Wall Street. You have to tell us what you want to see. If you were here for two weeks you still wouldn%26#39;t see everything, so in eight hours you really have to pick and choose carefully.
What to see in NYC in one dayOne day is hard to manage in Manhattan. If I only had one day I would walk Central Park and see the Museum of Natural History. Then a play or musical of your choice. If a play or musical is out of the question on your budget consider an Evening in the Park.
Take a look at this Washington Post article for some good ideas:

Thanks for the suggestions. I would really love to stay longer in NYC but our focus is DC. My daughter who is 10 really wants to see New York and ';the big buildings';. I think our goal is to see some of the things that you associate with New York, like Central Park, maybe see the Statue of Liberty. Again thanks for all the ideas.
Like others have said, you can do Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park and even stroll through Rockefeller Centre. If you%26#39;re up for a busy day, I think all can be accomplished.
I%26#39;d suggest trying to do all of them. I really enjoyed all of them.
Thanks again for the detailed advice. I believe we are changing our plans from Bolt Bus to MegaBus (the time schedule will give us about 2 more hours in NY). Let me give more detail on what we want to see: Empire State Building, Ground Zero, Time Square, Fifth Ave, Central Park. I%26#39;m contemplating China Town and that surrounding area...is it a safe area? Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
