Which side of the plane?

Hi

I%26#39;m just booking my next trip to New York and this time flying in to Newark from the UK.

I%26#39;ve heard that you can get a really good view of Manhattan from one side of the plane on the approach. Does anyone know which side it is?

(Sorry if this sounds trivial but those little details count!!!)

Thanks

Which side of the plane?

I%26#39;m not an expert, by I would imagine there would be too many variables to predict this consistently. The precise angle of approach is probably determined by the prevailing winds at the time of approach, weather conditions on the ground, how backed up things are, which runway, etc.

And even if it was possible to have advance info about all these things when you book your seat, air traffic control may put your flight into a holding pattern before landing.

I%26#39;m merely speculating, of course. Maybe I%26#39;m wrong...

Which side of the plane?

I agree with J-A-W-P. The view is unpredictable.

I fly into EWR frequently - and on both sides of the plane. I can remember only a few occasions when I have had a great view of Manhattan.

Since EWR is south of Manhattan, you might assume that you would do better on the right side of a plane when coming from the east. On the other hand, if the plane turns south, and then banks into EWR from the west, you would have had a better view from the left side of the plane.

You will be so tired after 6 - 7 hours on the plane that you probably won%26#39;t care about the view, anyway!

(FYI - The most reliable Manhattan views seem to be on flights into and out of LaGuardia Airport. Unfortunately, LGA doesn%26#39;t handle trans-Atlantic flights.)

As some one who from time to time lives under the many changing patterns from JFK and LGA the approach to the airports depends a great deal on wind and weather.

Unless you can predict the wind patterns on arrival and which flightpaths the air traffic controllers are going to use then there is no way of knowing which side will have the best view.

There is no east west approach to Newark the plane will either be coming from the South (you want to be on the right side)or the norh left side). There has only been one time I%26#39;ve flown that I have taken off from the North

Thanks for all your comments.

I%26#39;ve spoken to a couple of friends who also think the best view is from the right-hand side so I%26#39;ll go with that.
