Hey everyone,
I%26#39;m going to be visiting New York for a week in June, but i%26#39;m just kind of confused when it comes to the transit system. Do I have to buy a card and fill it with money in order to ride the subway? Or do they have collector booths where I can just put my change in a fare box? Thanks to anyone that can help me.
NY Transit question
You should buy a 7 day unlimited ride MetroCard.
You%26#39;ll purchase this before your first ride and swipe every time.
I they%26#39;re $25.00 now. You can buy the card from the staffed booth or a machine. Credit cards are accepted in the machines.
NY Transit question
Well, the only thing is we wont be taking public transit that much. We might even just take the subway twice (Yankees game). The rest of the stay we will be walking and taking taxis. What are my options for just making maybe two trips?
To use the subway, you must use a MetroCard. The subway fare is $2, and you can buy a MetroCard in vending machines at subway stations. The minimum value you may purchase is $4. If you know you are going to ride the subway a specific number of times, you can purchase a card for that amount, keeping in mind that you get a 15% in you purchase a card worth $7 or more.

If you choose to ride the bus, you can use a MetroCard of exact change (no bills accepted). Here is info on how to ride the bus:

If you know you are only going to use the subway to travel to Yankee Stadium and back, you could get a MetroCard for the number of trips you need for your entire group. You can share the same card, as long as it is a pay-per-ride card.

Well, it%26#39;s your choice, but if I were do, I%26#39;d definitely take the subway instead of the taxi. As I%26#39;ve said before, the subway system of NY is the eighth wonder of the world: safer, faster and cheaper than any cab.
I stayed in NY for a week and I took the taxi only once, on a Saturday. The traffic was fine and I was pleased with the service, but my #1 option is still the subway.
Travelers need to carefully evaluate their plans prior to buying $25 weekly metro cards. Figure a ride is $2. You can transfer from a bus to a subway ( or reverse) for no charge--if both are needed to get somewhere. You change one train ( subway) line for another at no charge. So, if you think you will ride more than 12 times--get the weekly pass. If you do not think you will ride more than 12 times, get a regular pass. Don%26#39;t forget only one person can use the weekly--so that is $25 per person. Friends of mine recently visited and someone else suggested the weekly and I thanked them for their contribution to the MTA--since they did NOT get their monies worth.
Some people think that they can share the unlimited Metrocards.
But in my opinion, buying the $20 Pay-As-You-Go Metrocards and getting a 15% bonus is the way to go.

That bonus used to be 20%. :-(
Thanks for all the help!
I guess I just wanted to use the taxi because the subway system just looks so confusing. But I guess I can just ask questions and check out maps so i can plan my trips. Thanks guys.
Taking a cab everywhere is really a bad idea as you will spend half your time sitting in traffic watching the meter move as you are not. 5 million people take the subway every day, it%26#39;s really not difficult. But it%26#39;s up to you...
If you find the subway confusing, you can do like me and take the bus everywhere. I always buy the unlimited metrocard and never take a cab. I even took the bus from Laguardia into Manhattan the last time I was in town. I did not have to worry about the meter going crazy while sitting idle in the cab. I appreciated that very much!
The bus system is very easy to understand and NY buses, unlike those in Montreal, are comfortable, clean and have air conditioning. If you worry about buying an unlimited metrocard, buy a refillable one where you put money on it and split it with your significant other. Either that or bring a roll of quarters because buses don%26#39;t accept paper money.
The problem with the bus is that you get stuck in the same traffic as the cab. You do get to see the street which you don%26#39;t on the subway, but for most routes the subway is just a faster/better option. Also, I would think the bus system would be MORE confusing than the subway to a visitor (it has a lot more routes/lines than the subway).
