I have friend who will be visiting New York City for the first time this summer. Her husband wants to take her to a Symphony, or a Ballet, or an Opera. What is appropriate attire for each? She wants to fit in, to wear what most others will be wearing.
Thanks for your help!

Attire for Symphony, Opera, or Ballet?
You will see varying types of attire at these performances from formal to very casual with the attire becoming more casual as the seats become less expensive. However, most men wear a long sleeve shirt and a sports jacket and women wear a dress or a blouse and pants or skirt. You can also dress more formally and still fit in.
Attire for Symphony, Opera, or Ballet?
I went to the ballet this past Saturday night and was actually shocked that people weren%26#39;t all that dressed up. My daughter and I wore nice dresses with high heels and jewelry, and we saw mostly casual pants outfits for men and women. We even saw a couple people in jeans, but I certainly would not recommend that. I think ballet, opera or the symphony is something special that should be celebrated with dressy attire.
I suggest carrying a lightweight jacket...it can be a bit cool inside.
Make sure your friends check the schedules of the different performing companies - or Lincoln Center - because there are fewer of these performances during the summer.
Hope they have a wonderful time!
