Hey all im going to NY with my partner in August. Just wondering about any recomendations for shows. We have seen a couple of shows in Vegas but never any in Broadway. Any info would be great.
broadway shows
I loved August Osage COunty....check it out if it is still playing...
broadway shows
Spamalot
Avenue Q
(musicals, both funny)
August: Osage County
(play, funny but serious topics)
Les Miserables
Lion King
Phantom of the Opera
(more traditional musicals, very spectacular)
Check out broadwaybox.com or theatermania.com for discount tickets. I%26#39;ve often gotten great seats at a considerable savings.
We loved In the Heights!
Passing Strange was a really interesting rock musical. Great high energy cast, funny at times but really poignant overall.
Concurring with kateoz, I%26#39;d suggest Spamalot (Monty Python %26amp; The Holy Grail, with that whistling tune from Life of Brian), and Avenue Q.
If interested in a play by a Briton, Caryl Churchill%26#39;s Top Girls opened two weeks ago. We saw it in previews, and several people complained to the house manager about the play%26#39;s penchant for overtalking! The reviews are very mixed.
Check out www.Broadwayworld.com for a plethora of short articles touting the various shows at any and all of the 38 Broadway theaters.
A Broadway theater, BTW, is one that%26#39;s (a) within a block of Broadway and (b) has more than 499 seats.
Parents coming to NYC with kids should take note that, while Avenue Q is a puppet show, it%26#39;s the kind of puppet show that features live puppet sex on stage. Keep that in mind if thinking of bringing a smaller child in. There are more suitable shows for them.
I%26#39;ve seen Jersey Boys, August: Osage County, and Country Girl. I loved them all. I like musicals and dramas. If you go to TKTs ask other people in line what they%26#39;ve seen. Also people on the bus or in cafes don%26#39;t mind sharing either. There are good off broadway shows as well.
It depends on taste. Different strokes for different folks. What have you seen? That would give people an idea of what you like (or don%26#39;t like).
My absolute favorite is RENT. But that%26#39;s me. Maybe you could watch the movie on DVD and see for yourself. If you like the movie and the music, you%26#39;ll love the play.
Have fun!
I saw Spring Awakening last month and I really enjoyed it. I believe it won the Tony Award for best musical last year.
