My family wants to spend Christmas together. We live in the Cayman Islands and the rest of the family are in the UK. They jumped on the idea of staying in New York. However the more I research this the more expensive it gets. We need at least 4 bedrooms, but preferably 5, and some space so we are not under each others feet. (Usual thing...my mother and me togethr under same roof/kitchen wars etc) The family consists of: Me and my husband and 8 yr old son, our two other children joinng us from the UK (18 and 21), My single brother (42) and my parents (both 70ish). So the room configuration is a challenge.
Of course I suggested that Orlando with a large villa would be more suitable, but we did that a couple of years ago and the rest of the family obviously want to try something new.
SO we(husband and I)wondered about staying somewhere outside New York, renting a holiday property, or two close to each other, where we could take a train in to New York for sightseeing etc, but could have a nice traditional Christmas Day.
Does anyone have any ideas as to loaction etc. I have never been to New York so really know nothing about the area.
Would be grateful for any advice.
Christmas in New York
Vacation rentals are a problem in NYC. Lots of scams etc. If you want to stay in Manhattan, consider a few rooms at a b %26amp; b like
1871house.com
west-eleventh.com
wymanhouse.com
or maybe a few suites at one of the suite hotels like
affinia.com
If you want to consider staying outside of Manhattan and don%26#39;t want to be ';under the same roof'; as Mom, that becomes a challenge to find 2 houses near each other. There are some townhouses in Woodside, Queens (still part of NYC but outside Manhattan) but I think they%26#39;ve already been rented for the holidays by someone else who posted on the forum.

Christmas in New York
Thanks some great looking places, but the second one does not allow under 18s. However still looking for idea in the coutry outside new York. I loved the look of the 1871 house. Think I would definitley want to go there if it was just the three of us.
Have you considered house swapping? Certainly some New Yorkers might be interested in a Cayman Island getaway over the Xmas holidays......you might be able to get something terrific, whether a city apt or a charming suburban home within an easy train ride to the city (Westchester, Southern Ct etc)
What an excellent idea...in fact it had crossed my mind, but having never done it before.... However I think I will give it some serious thought. Thanks.
I repeat, if you are serious about needing to be under 2 different roofs (ie not share a kitchen with Mom) whether you swap or rent, it%26#39;s unlikely you%26#39;ll find 2 houses next to or near each other. Here%26#39;s a 4 bedroom house in Maplewood, New Jersey which is not far from NYC. Don%26#39;t know how far the house is from train station, marketing etc.

Note that when you click for availability, it shows for a totally different property. Don%26#39;t know what that%26#39;s about.
Here%26#39;s something interesting in Nyack, a pretty town on the Hudson.

It mentions some more bedrooms nearby. I don%26#39;t know what the commute to NYC is like. No train from there but maybe bus.
PS People who do house swaps plan very far in advance. If you%26#39;re serious about that, don%26#39;t think too long. Also, consider using an agency rather than trying to do it on your own.

What makes sense for you to pay? That will help advisors.
