Trip was completely researched, planned, and finalized, but now, our 23 yr. old son asked if he could ';tag along'; for the NYC part of the trip. Booked at the Salisbury, so adding 1 more shouln%26#39;t be a big problem (we have a suite for 6 booked). Have hairspray tickets bought....he%26#39;s not interested in that....so all is good there. Problem comes in here. He will be staying one more night than we will because he would like to catch a Yankees game (if possible) on July 18th. Where would be a reasonable, and logistic wise, good place for him to stay. He will be flying out of JFK.
One more thing, he is very interested in taking a city tour. He did this in Chicago and loved having someone point all the buildings and places of interest. He is in the finance/stocks and bonds field and this is one of the main reasons he wants to be in NYC for a few days. What tour do you think would give him a good overview of the city?
Family of 5 is now 6......help!
One question I left out. How will this complicate our ride from JFK to the hotel? Are their 6 passenger vans available?
Family of 5 is now 6......help!
I%26#39;ll give you a suggestion for your last question first. If you are referring to cabs, no, I don%26#39;t believe there are six passenger vans available. You would have to look into either hiring somebody for six, or, since he is 23 and shouldn%26#39;t have any trouble being on his own, you could point him to the AirTrain and subway combo; it will cost him seven bucks:

I%26#39;m not sure, but I think you are flying into JFK? If not, there is also an AirTrain at Newark:
http://www.panynj.gov/airtrainnewark/
If Newark, he would take the New Jersey Transit train to New York Penn Station, then make his way to the Salisbury. Check both website for more details. Once he gets in to Manhattan, you could all meet up at the hotel. Does everyone involved have a cell phone?
If you are flying into LGA, I think two cabs for all of you would probably be the easiest solution. Others may have better ideas.
If it is just him staying the extra night, why not try Priceline for his lodging? Just about anywhere in Manhattan would be good; since he is interested in the Financial District, maybe a hotel down there, then hop the A train to go back to JFK, via the AirTrain. For pointers and tips on using Priceline, go to www.betterbidding.com and read all the suggestions available there.
As to the tour, is he interested in a tour of the Financial District, or the entire city? Does he want to get on a bus, or would he like to walk around? City Walks are great for self directed walking jaunts:

Hope this helps. And tell him he has to buy dinner for everyone one night!
Starting backwards, you probably wouldn%26#39;t have fit into a 5 passenger van with luggage so either take 2 taxis and split up ($60 x 2= $120) or treat the group to a stretch limo. Try

For 1 night of hotel, first I%26#39;d PHONE the Salisbury, speak to the manager and ask if they might have a single room for 1 night at a good rate so he can just stay there. If that doesn%26#39;t work, maybe a place on the upper west side would be good for him. But I urge you/he to make sure he can get tickets to the game. Games are selling out. For an affordable place on the UWS, try

Some of the above hotels have rooms with shared bath so if he doesn%26#39;t care, good way to save money. If he does, make sure of what you%26#39;re booking. Speaking of shared bathrooms, not far from the Salisbury, the Westside YMCA is a good cheap option. They have some private rooms (shared bathrooms). Rooms on top floors are recently renovated.
Ofcourse the other option is to bid on Priceline for a hotel for 1 night. Could be the best/cheapest option. People frequently win the Hudson hotel (3* upper midtown/central park) which is near the Salisbury but hip/cool for $100-150/night. It%26#39;s not the only 3* in that area though so no guarantees.
As for a tour, if he wants something specifically geared to finance, I think he has to get a private guide. If you all are interested in doing this and haven%26#39;t already booked something else, it prob. wouldn%26#39;t be that much more than all of you taking one of the group tours. Michelle Nivius is very good.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Never thought of priceline for him. Yes, it would be more convineint to stay at the Salis. I will give them a call.
Yes flying into JFK. Looked at the limo site, not much more $$ than two taxies.
The Westside YMCA also looks to be an option. Its only for 1 night.
Yes, we all have cell phones. I think he will be out on his own quite a bit and will walk the financial district, but since this is our 1st trip, I think we all could benefit from a guided tour. We did sign up for the BAG several months ago, Also realize this is iffy, and would like alternative plans for a good general info. tour.
We all will take the Statten Island Ferry for a good look, but do not want to get off and do a land tour. From this sites info., I just don%26#39;t think we have the time.
Would Circle line tour (?) be an option for general information? Thinking about the 2 hour one.
