Because the grid system of New York streets is set at approximately 30 degrees north of true East/West, the streets don%26#39;t line up with sunset on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. However, they do on May 28th and July 12. Consequently, at the risk of having a whole bunch of TA contributors blocking my view, I%26#39;ll be at Tudor City Place looking along 42nd Street at approximately 8pm on May 28th to, weather permitting, catch some spectacular shots of the sun flooding across the whole width of Manhattan.
To see what I mean, have a look at the photos here: bridgeandtunnelclub.com/bigmap/鈥ndex.htm

What a fountain of knowledge you are! That%26#39;s my b%26#39;day. :)

Take some spectacular photos for me Nic.
DARN!!! that looks very cool....post some pictures Nic....I leave for home on the 26th!!
The sunset over the Gulf of Mexico will have to do!!
I was in NYC one year around those dates, probably the date in July and I wasn%26#39;t aware of what was happening but I remember noticing that it was different and that it was very impressive.
I%26#39;m sure someone here is clever enough to work out how far the sun moves each day but I would have thought that it can%26#39;t be that much that you wouldn%26#39;t see a very similar effect one or two days either side Jennifer.
Don%26#39;t worry, I%26#39;ll post plenty of photos!
ah ha....very true Nic...how fast could it move in two days!!! I%26#39;ll have to go to Tudor City on Monday!!
I%26#39;d have thought you%26#39;d have known the answer given your heavenly links!
This is great for observation and picture taking but not driving. If you are driving west in Manhattan around that time the sun totally blinds you.
Yet another reason not to own a car in Manhattan eh, Ken?
Just thought I%26#39;d point out that last night I was on the BQE passing Calvary Cemetery and the sun was setting over Manhattan ..... beuatiful. Big orange ball being swallowed up by the skyline. But Nic is right ..... the angle of the sun is starting to align with the grid and the sun could be seen between the tall building as we drove past. So you can already get a pretty good look at the phenomenum (did I just spell that correctly?) right now. But in my opinion ..... the view of Manhattan is always better from Brooklyn ..... or Queens.
