If it%26#39;s northside Williamsburg, you%26#39;re in one of the hippest, hottest nightlife neighborhoods in the city, full of bars and music venues. People go there for nightlife.

As for getting into Manhattan, it%26#39;s fine - as long as the L train is running. Sometimes it isn%26#39;t. It can be a little unpredictable. Check www.mta.info for details.

I hope your apartment exists. I saw on another posting that you recommended sublet.com even though you haven%26#39;t seen if your apartment exists and is a legal rental. Sort of putting the cart before the horse if you ask me to recommend a service to others before knowing the results....

Renting apartments in NYC is NOT like renting apartments in other parts of the world. Scams are rife, most apartments can%26#39;t be legally rented to others, etc. I really hope you didn%26#39;t wire anyone money, if you did you should really look for alternative accomodations.

the apartment is situated in Ridgewood, so what do you think are we in a good spot then? thanks or the replies! hope my apartment actually exists

Ridgewood is in Queens, Williamsburg is in Brooklyn. Do you have an address?

the address is 18-15 Stockholm St Ridgewood NY 11385.

Please check your other thread on that issue.

Not only is that not Williamsburg, the city is actively trying to catch people staying at that location illegally so they can fine the owners and shut it down. The neighbors are apparently calling in complaints.

In the other thread, I have linked listings from a city database showing the situation.

In my mind, anyone calling that address ';Williamsburg'; is committing fraud, anyway. That is not Williamsburg in the wildest dreams of the most optimistic.

OK, you are definitely not in Williamsburg, my friend. As I recently read in a blog about Queens, an ad for a house in Ridgewood ';bragged “just minutes from Williamsburg!!!” Yes, a whole bunch of minutes. And years away in terms of nightlife.';

It%26#39;s an old-school working class enclave, surrounded by some industrial and sketchy patches that are not that great.

It%26#39;s actually one of the oldest areas of NYC, with a long history starting from the original Dutch settlers, with a big history of German and Italian immigrants. Note the street names (e.g. Onderdonck). Think ';Archie Bunker.';

Now it is attracting Southeast Asian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani immigrants wanting to put down roots. An assortment of very average, unglamorous local people. Not a lot going on, but it is home to the largest Holi and Diwali parties in Queens.

You%26#39;ll be about a 10 minute walk from the DeKalb Avenue stop on the L train, which takes you to Williamsburg and then on to Manhattan.

I hope GreenWhiteBlue chimes in, he%26#39;ll probably have more to say.

I bet you%26#39;ll be renting rooms in a private house. In fact, your street made top billing in this 2006 article int he New York Times. Maybe you%26#39;ll be staying at a house in this picture:

nytimes.com/2006/…

Personally, not my first pick for first-timer visitors to NYC. On the other hand, I understand that there are a lot of Irish construction workers who rent houses in Ridgewood, Glendale and Maspeth in the summer for temp work in NYC. Not too sure about the lagalitites, but...

Anyway, how did you get this place? What did you know about it before you said yes? How much you%26#39;re paying? Are you in touch with the landlord?

Just want to make sure you have details.

jhwanderer - Whoa!! I was typing when you were posting. Sheesh!

Hi, thanks to everyone who replied. After contacting the owner he advised me that all was legit as he rents out the whole appartment and not just individual rooms, he has been very helpful and accomodationg throughout and i would not like him to get a poor reputation that was undeserved.

Thanks again to all those who replied.

Read your other posting regarding this. He deserves that reputation, but you know you seem determined to move ahead and not listen to people who live here.....
