Shopping trip to new york - where to stay?

I now know the secret to our family vacation... We should temporarily live next to a department store like Neiman%26#39;s or Saks. Because when the hubby and kids are in the room, I%26#39;ll be out %26amp; about shopping nearby!

Toy%26#39;s R Us or a store that sells video games shouldn%26#39;t also be far behind.

So far I know it%26#39;s gonna be on 5th avenue, but which one?

We are a family of four kids aged 10 %26amp; 11.

Thanks

No Neiman%26#39;s in NYC. Bergdorf%26#39;s will have to do. The NY Palace is probably closest hotel to Saks. Parker Meridien is close to Bergdorf and has a rooftop (enclosed) swimming pool that the kids would like. Toys R Us is in Times Square so any of the hotels in that area will do. Doubletree Guest Suites in TS or Marriott Marquis are good for a family. The Blakely and the London hotel also have suites and are near but not in Times Square and nor far from the dept. stores.

Bailey Chow,

NYC is pretty big and there are areas to shop all over it. On the other hand it has a vast subway and bus system, there are taxis everywhere and it is very easy to get around. Personally I would not pick an area to stay based on a department store. You could stay right near Saks, but then maybe you%26#39;d like to visit Bloomingdales. Or you could stay near Bloomindales, but then you%26#39;d have to travel to Macy%26#39;s.

I would decide how much you%26#39;d like to spend per night, then see what is available and narrow down your choices.

Oh, and Barney%26#39;s you could stay near Barneys, Then walk to Bloomingdales but then....

As long as it%26#39;s a department store that%26#39;s fine. We can hit the other department stores in other days anyways. It%26#39;s convenient for ME - haha - selfish mama eh?

But in my experience with our recent trip, all they want to do is stay in the room and watch cartoon network %26amp; ESPN after we see the sights. Which left me with just staring at the ceiling.

Besides any department store has lots of departments so I doubt if I can finish it in one day. It%26#39;s just for the spare time we have when we get back to the hotel.

Plus, I%26#39;m in charge of bringing the meals/snacks because room service is expensive and can take up to 45 minutes. Whereas if I bring the food up we%26#39;ll taste the local flavor and it%26#39;s more practical for us.

So, if you were to pick a dept store - where would you stay? near Saks, Neiman%26#39;s or Bergdorf%26#39;s? It must have high end designer BAGS because that%26#39;s my playground.

Is Holiday inn express ok? How about a hotel with view of central park and almost beside a dept. store?

Is New York safe?

There is no Neiman Marcus in Manhattan.

Bergdoff%26#39;s is on 58th adn 5th. You could stay on Central Park south and walk there. Bergdoff%26#39;s is a great store but it is one of the most expensive stores in NYC. Personally I%26#39;d pick Saks. While it is very expensive there are more moderately prices items as well. Bloomingdales and Macy%26#39;s are more affordable department stores. Of the two I%26#39;d pick Bloomingdales.

Under what area is Times Square and 5th Avenue?

I%26#39;m narrowing my search in this site.

Thanks

Holiday Inn Express has 2 hotels, one on 45 st. just off Fifth ave. which is a decent location but rooms are small. They apparently have some 1 bedroom suites if the kids can sleep together on a pull out couch. There%26#39;s another newer one in the 30%26#39;s but that%26#39;s near Macy%26#39;s which doesn%26#39;t sound like your style.

The hotels with views of Central Park are mostly very expensive. You%26#39;re sending mixed signals. On the one hand Saks, Neiman%26#39;s and high end designer bags and then you ask about Holiday Inn Express. This is a disconnect. What%26#39;s your budget and when are you coming?

Times Square is midtown west. Fifth ave. divides east from west.

Sorry about that NYWhiz.

If I can save on hotel then why not right? I mostly spend on bags.

I usually alternate between budget hotel %26amp; luxury hotels. Depending on the place we%26#39;re in.

But anyways...

Just goes to show how confused I am.

Selfish me must indulge on my department store fix. Because like I said I won%26#39;t be doing anything in the room so might as well go shopping in NYC right? Plus I think a department store lets me browse on a lot of things versus shopping on a store to store basis.

On our last trip to the US I had the mistake of staying at Fisherman%26#39;s wharf and I was left with nothing to do after 6 except go to Safeway %26amp; Walgreens.

Our last stop then was in Las Vegas where I thought I will be doing my shopping but found only a few things vs the stores in Union Square.

So after picking a hotel then I%26#39;d have to see if the tours pick up from there......

In NYC, as long as you stay in ';midtown'; (34 st- 59 st.) you%26#39;d be within a short cab ride to all the major dept. stores. The Jumeriah Essex House and the Helmsley Park Lane are 2 of the less expensive hotels on Central Park South which would put you near Bergdorf%26#39;s, not far from Barney%26#39;s, Bloomingdales. It%26#39;s also not far from FAO Schwarz (fancy toy store) and Nintendo World, Sony wonderlab etc. I would also look at the Affinia Gardens hotel. Nice suite hotel near Bloomingdales.

Still checking out NY Palace. Looking good....

Oooh Nintendo %26amp; Sony - we%26#39;ll be sure to visit there - by cab. We can also go to Toys R Us by cab.

Actually we%26#39;re going in 2009. I know it%26#39;s 11 months from now but I planned for our west coast trip in 6 months.

i can only do research in the evenings and there%26#39;s only so much info I can read (eyestrain)
