Advice on Hotel near Central Park

Hi all,

Ive just signed up to this website, and this has probably been posted many many times before (sorry!)

Im looking for a hotel near to Central Park, not necessarily a fancy hotel but would like to stay in a safe area, the (double) room to be comfortable, and as long as its fairly easy to get out and about (dont want it to be in the middle of nowhere). Would like to be in walking distance o the main attractions near to Central Park.

For two of us we are looking to spend about 拢800 each to cover both flights and accommodation. (therefore we may have to compromise on quality of hotel but dont want to end up in a really horrible one)

1) is it better to do flights and hotel seperately or should we look for a package?

2) what area should we look for a hotel in?

3) can anyone recommend a hotel?

4) would we be better off looking at a B%26amp;B rather than a hotel?

5) Are there any areas which we should stay away from?

Many Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

Advice on Hotel near Central Park

Hey,

You don%26#39;t say how long you are going for so I%26#39;m unsure as to how far your budget will stretch.

Just to give you an idea - My boyfriend and I are going to NY for the first time at the end of May for 5 days. We%26#39;re staying at The Pod Hotel, in a double room with private shower, which has a lot of great reviews and isn%26#39;t far from Times Square and Central Park. The address is 230 E 51st St. NYC, NY 10022 - put that in Google Maps and you can see!

With flights and accomodation added up it comes to 拢1105.

Hope this helps!

Advice on Hotel near Central Park

1) It depends. ;) YOu have to check both ways. If you buy hotel separately, you will have more choices.

2) Why do you want to stay near Central Park? Are you runners? The park is HUGE. Hotels at the south end are generally expensive.

3)A few budget options are the Salisbury, the Buckingham and the Wellington. If you stay on the upper west side, you are also near the park but a different section. The Milburn, the Belleclaire, Park 79, the Beacon, the Excelsior are some moderately priced options there. The Belleclaire and Park 79 have some rooms with shared bath that are cheaper.

4) Jacksbandb.com is like apts. and very popular-on the upper west side.

The best thing you can do to make your budget go far is pick the time you come very carefully. July/August are a lot cheaper than say Oct/Nov/Dec.

You haven%26#39;t given us nearly enough info (how many days you want and when) but know that it%26#39;s now almost impossible to find anything below $200/night unless you stay in a place with shared bathrooms (some of which are not bad at all).

Try the Newton on Broadway - four blocks from Central park - see reviews. We loved it and although it is on 94th Street its really easy to get to wherever you need to on the subway which is about 100 yards away, realy easy to use and very safe. We will definately stay there again next year

My boyfriend and I just stayed four nights at 6 Columbus at the beginning of April. It was a stone%26#39;s throw away from Central Park (perfect for grabbing a coffee and taking a morning walk in the park) and it was very affordable. It was a hip little hotel and had a great little bar in it (and Blue Ribbon Sushi, which we didn%26#39;t eat at - but the food looked good!).

Our room (single occupancy) was only $245 a night. I was looking at double occupancy rooms to go back in the fall with my sisters, and they seem to vary between $300 and $400, depending on the month.

It was very safe, very clean, very good service. It was a short walk to the Upper East Side stores and restaurants; a subway stop located directly across the street made getting downtown SO simple and easy. You can also easily walk over to the Rockefeller Center area if you wanted to see spots over there. The hotel staff was wonderful, too!

1) you will find it cheaper and have more options if you book separately. If you book it with a tour operator then you will be looking @ about 拢800 each....if you do it separately and your not picky who you fly with then i think it could be actually done 拢800 in total ?!!

2) you seem to have the same idea as me when i was looking to stay in nyc...you want to be in the middle of things i.e within walking distance of the majority of attractions

3)i can recommend wellington hotel just south of central park....i can%26#39;t recommend the actual hotel itself as i haven%26#39;t been yet we go at xmas but i can recommend it be one you look at for the bargain of a price i think i%26#39;ve got...

4) can%26#39;t help here or

5) here unfortunatley.....i don%26#39;t remember seeing many hotels offering breakfast nor do i know of any areas to avoid...sorry !!

I was looking at prices for someone else end Aug/beginning of Sept. from Edinburgh, so London should be cheaper. Found decent options Aug 28-Sept 3 including an air/hotel package on Expedia with 6 nights at the Hudson hotel (small rooms but nice trendy hotel not far from 6 Columbus mentioned above) for around 750 gbp/person. The price was about the same for the Wellington which is not as nice a hotel.

If your dates are flexible, go to kayak.com and check the chart on when prices are best. farecompare.com is another place to look. Quikbook.com is a good place to check for hotels. (kayak also has hotels)

Thanks for all your replies guys, I really appreciate it. Spent hours and hours trawling the internet and finally settled on Flatotel in Midtown. Really pleased with my choice, and very very excited now!!!

Thanks again!
