We are a family of 4 -2 adults and 2 teenagers and have booked the salisbury for early July but after reading some of the reviews I am getting a little nervous, the location seems good, but hotel seems old.
I have an oppportunity to book at the embassy suites at a slightly higher rate but it includes a full breakfast, so the higher rate is offset by breakfast. Which hotel is better? We are planning on the usual tourist activities and broadway plays
Thanks

embassy suites vs salisbury
I know how you feel. I did the same thing with the Salisbury and now I am getting nervous. I am going in a few weeks. I also booked the Wingate Manhattan and am still deciding. I just like the location of the Salisbury really well. I will let you know if I stay in the Salisbury how it is..
embassy suites vs salisbury
You have absolutely no need to be nervous about The Salisbury. Yes it is an older hotel and a little careworn in places but the rooms are huge, the beds are comfortable and the location is perfect - close enough to the popular areas (Broadway, Times Square) without being affected by the crowds and a subway station at each end of the street. Add to that the fact that Central Park is 5 minutes walk away and Carnegie Hall is virtually opposite and I think you have a great location.
We stayed in the Salisbury as a family of 4 in February. I was a bit nervous like you, as I like my hotels clean and modern! However as we were a family of 4 we really needed the room.
The Salisbury is quite dated, and a little scruffy in parts, but it is clean which is really important to me. If it wasn%26#39;t at all clean then I would have moved hotels. You spend very little time in your hotel anyway. As for location for all the usual tourist attractions, then you couldn%26#39;t get any better. For me, you can%26#39;t beat the location, and the price for the amount of space you get beats the fact that the hotel is a little dated. Hope this helps!
thanks for all the replys you have helped me to feel better about the hotel,, so far I have gotten the message that new york hotels are about location and from what ya%26#39;ll are saying it looks like the Salisbury is the hotel for us.

Sounds like good advice above.
We stayed at the Embassy Suites (near the WTC site) in October and spent a LOT of time commuting! Our room was free with hotel points, so it was worth it, but we lost 1-2 hours each day. (Although the teenage girl cousins liked all the ';Chat Time';)
The WTC subway stop is a 5-10 minute walk through downtown - great in the daytime, but we felt uncomfortable late at night.
Several nights, after a Broadway show, we rode the M20 bus, which does stop right next to the hotel. It was a pleasant ride, but twice we waited 30+ minutes at the Times Square stop...then had a 30 minute ride.
The ES breakfast is nice...but you can spend your ';extra hour'; each morning eating somewhere instead of traveling! Have a fun trip!
We stayed at the Salisbury for Christmas.
The hotel is super clean and the rooms are really really big!
We went to 3 broadway shows and walked back to the hotel with our teen girls.
No worries and have fun!
I agree with everything that%26#39;s been written but I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s fair to say NYC hotels are ALL about location. A combination of location and the hotel itself factor costs. Obviously there are some hotels (like some of the Affinia.com group) that offer both central location and more up to date accomodation. I also think the Embassy Suites is a much more pleasant place to stay in warm weather than during the winter. It%26#39;s location near the water and Battery Park makes it cool and breezy in summer while it can be windy and bleak in winter. I%26#39;m not suggesting you nec. chose it, gmwrdh. Just saying the experience is a bit different there in summer.
thanks for the info. commute time is an issue as we want to make the most of this trip including doing some college visits. so it looks like the Salisbury will fill the bill.

I will for sure let you know gmwrdh how the Salisbury is when I return. We still have decided if we are staying there or the Wingate. Need to decide soon!
