Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn/Memorial Day

Anyone know anything about this? My friend claims that there are bands and people having picnics in the cemetery this day. Is this something to experience?

Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn/Memorial Day

I know nothing about the event, but I can tell you that the cemetery itself is extremely lovely, and worth visiting whether for its natural features (trees and topography; it%26#39;s on the top of the terminal moraine and from some of the hills there are fine views), in its historical interest (heck, they%26#39;ve got Boss Tweed, Bat Masterson, and Lola Montez!) and in the Victorian taste (or lack thereof) of some of the monuments.

Cool, sounds like we should check it out! Thanks.

Correction: Masterson is in Woodlawn in the Bronx. No matter; Greenwood has Henry Ward Beecher AND Albert Anastasia...

Well this is pretty cool. Not only is there a free concert there on Mon the 26th, Memorial Day, but this Sat., May 24th is evidently the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. There%26#39;s a trolley tour at the cemetery visiting gravesites of people who played a role in the opening of the bridge. Tour is $20. Call 718 768-7300 for reservations; space on the trolley is limited

I was just reading about the anniversary of the BB here: iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/22/america/NA-GE鈥?/a>

I wondered if Sat. is its actual 125th anniversary, why they would have the celebration today? Any thoughts?

They also have wild parrots that escaped in the late 60s and live there (and at Brooklyn College)

This guy gives a tour once a month, pretty interesting.

The highest point in Brooklyn is at Green-Wood, which has been designated a national historic landmark, and there are lovely views of the Statue of Liberty, the harbor, and the Manhattan skyline. This area was also the site of the Battle of Brooklyn during the Revolutionary War, which battle is I believe reenacted at the cemetery every year. There is a good map of the cemetery available at the entrance that highlights grave locations of some of the famous people there.

From the Green-Wood cemetery web site:

The ISO Symphonic Band (conducted by me) will be performing a concert at the gothic arch of Green Wood Cemetery (25th street entrance.) The performance begins at 2:30 and bring a blanket or chair it should be fun!

All the best!
