Help Wanted! (NYC Hotel search)

Hi there

I have been reading some posts today and still can%26#39;t pin down what I need to know, so thought I would post my own and see what turns up!

Here goes - I am taking my partner to NYC and Vegas for his 40th Birthday in mid August and although I have the Vegas thing pinned down, I just don%26#39;t know where to start in NYC. I need to find a clean, modernish hotel that costs around 拢100 a night (inclusive of taxes). It doesn%26#39;t have to be anywhere specific, as we are fine with travelling around. I%26#39;d also like to know what the best area is to stay in, as if we can%26#39;t find a hotel within our budget on here, I will just keep looking in certain areas you guys suggest.

We are very young at heart, so would really like to stay somewhere lively and in the centre of a buzzing nightlife but the budget is our main priority, as Vegas has wiped me out!

Thanks

拢100 = $200

which before taxes = $175

which for NYC is on the very low side and borders on sharing restrooms territory

I suggest you start with travelzoo, there are sometimes some pretty amazing deals on travelzoo.

The best neighborhoods to stay tend to be the most expensive. It is always nice to get out of Midtown and to be able to stay in the Village, SoHo, etc. but those neighborhoods are expensive.

I%26#39;ve been suggesting that people who are trying to save money and can%26#39;t afford Manhattan hotel prices look just across the river in Long Island City Queens. There are some new hotels there, the hotels are less than ten minutes on the subway from Bloomingdales. Long Island City is less than twenty minutes from Times Square. The Quality Inn is new, it is around the corner from the subway (the N and the W trains) and is two stops from 59th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

Sometimes the Radisson on Lexington Avenue has good rates, you just have to keep checking, it all depends on whether bookings are tracking higher or lower than expected.

Depending on how long you%26#39;re staying, you might be able to get a very nice hotel in Manhattan by bidding on Priceline. For stays of 4-5 days or less, you can usually get a 4* hotel for $120-200/night plus tax. If you don%26#39;t know about Priceline,

betterbidding.com

biddingfortravel.com

both explain how it works. Hotwire.com is another option (although usually a bit more expensive) and betterbidding website has lists of Hotwire hotels and explains Hotwire too.

Hi

I agree with the bidding thing

but prices are high these days. I got a 3 star hotel in manhattan starting next week for $150+tax on price bidding. it was in central midtwon ';I think its called like this';

Must check the sites shown up for bidding

Hi Nic,

I live here in NYC and most hotels are super expensive.

I would suggest looking for locations in Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope or Willamsburg, Brooklyn. We have some new Holiday Inns, etc close to transportation to Manhattan.

I would also suggest googling Bed and Breakfasts-some people have lovely homes with rooms for rent, or check out craig%26#39;s list.

Good luck,

jenhardy

Another consideration is to stay across the river in New Jersey. You can get a good hotel for considerably cheaper and shuttle in. I have stayed at the Hilton (now the Doubletree)in Ft Lee NJ and took their hotel shuttle which drops you off in midtown (the Hilton actually at 57th - I think). The shuttle runs until almost until midnight. Just another consideration if on a tighter budget.
