take the risk - NY withour reservation (advices please...)

hello everybody.

me and my girlfriend will spend two weeks in NY from June10th to June24th. we want to try to not spend a lot: we are young and we need only a bed where sleep in the night. but is a long period and is really difficult to find a cheap place (like sun bright hotel or manhattan inn or wanderers inn) with a room free for all these days. also i have read in a lot of reviews that they don%26#39;t care about the on-line reservation.

so we are thinking to go in NY without reservation and try to find the room directly in the hostels.

maybe is more simple. maybe they have always some free room.

what do you think about?

I think that%26#39;s a terrible idea. You can%26#39;t even make it through customs without giving the address of the location you%26#39;re going to be staying.

Also, hotels and hostels are going to be packed at that time. Unless you%26#39;re hoping to spend your entire vacation in the airport, you need to book something now. And frankly, you%26#39;re booking very late. If you had reserved a room earlier, you might have been able to find a better deal- now you%26#39;ll be lucky to find anything at all.

What are you looking to spend?

Also, here%26#39;s what you%26#39;d have to look forward to at the Sun Bright Hotel, if it%26#39;s even still open:

It looks like the supposed Wanderer%26#39;s Inn was another illegal hostel that has been shut down by the Department of Buildings, too.

thanks for your fast answer.

i knew that the Sun was a ';borderline'; place but nevertheless in this site for example it have goods reviews.

also all the time that i call these kind of hostel (they say to me that is all full but in the site or in hostel.com for example there are free rooms). i don%26#39;t want to loose my money in a fake reservation.

we would like to not spend more than 100$ for night because we have to stay 14night and can be really expensive.

i know is risky to go in the city without reservation but what i can do?

we have planned this travel two weeks ago and i start to think that go and try is the only solution...

There are others who know far more about hostels than I do, but you should know that just showing up without a room reservation is not an option for you.

US Customs will not allow you into the country unless you provide the address of the location where you will be staying. I had a friend visiting for me the past few days, and she%26#39;d forgotten to write down my address. She was not allowed to leave customs until she phoned me to get my specific address.

I would not generally suggest this place by any means, but at this point, you will be lucky to find anything at all:

Sorry to be harsh, but you%26#39;re being stupid.

So you%26#39;re from Italy... and if I tried to come to Rome during Holy Week, with no reservations, for two weeks, would you recommend that?

You MUST have accommodations when you arrive at JFK or you will be turned away.

Do you fancy shlepping around for hours with heavy luggage in hot, humid weather trying to find a hostel that has openings, during one of the busiest seasons in NYC?

thanks to all the answer.

a clarification. now i%26#39;m already in US for studing and i have a house in Tempe AZ. my girlfriend will come here and after we will move to San Francisco and then to NY with Internal Flight. maybe is different, maybe not. i know is stupid to go in NY without reservation but the point was that in my travel experience i know that this kind of really cheap hostels have the tipical policy ';who first arrive, first get the room'; and that always they have free rooms for unexpected guest.is like this in italy and was like this in spain, denmark, germany, france, holland etc...why not in NY?

maybe Europe mentality is different, and this is the reason why i write on this post.

your answer are really usefull for me.

really thanks.

Well it sounds like you%26#39;ve taken the customs element out as you will be flying domestic, and it also sounds like no mater what folks here say, you are planning on coming to NYC for 2 weeks with a place to stay. Good luck and I hope you don%26#39;t have to spend the night in Central Park or sitting in Penn Station!

I appreciate all the answer and i will treasure the advices.

probably after all the posts i will reserve somethings more expensive.patience! at least i will be sure to get my holiday in NY.

but hope you will understand that my post was about a kind of travelling that i always use and that my only intent was to check if was possible also in NY.

isn%26#39;t it? ok, i take cognizance of it and go on.

thanks to all

d.

DANI, I admire your courtesy and politeness to the responses

to your understandable query. I remember my earlier travels

to European cities where there were tourist services at the

railroad stations, airports, and even places like St Tropez.

It is possible they have a service like that in New York.

Perhaps that is what you had in mind and someone can

direct you to it if they know about it.
