Hi all, my first time to post on this forum. Actually the question is for my 22yr old son. He is travelling alone from UK to New York in June for 6 days. He is going to a concert over there. He wants to make the most of his time, - so what do you all think are the things he shouldn%26#39;t miss. He is thinking of booking an organised day trip as well, in the hope that he will get to see a few things in one day.Any recommendations for companies that do good trips? Any other tips would be welcome.
Top things to do in New York for first timer ??
1) buy a metrocard for the subway.
2) we%26#39;d need to know more about his interests to make specific recommendations. But having a metrocard will afford him quick, easy, safe access to everything the city offers.

Thank you for that. He is a musician - he loves music, literature, going to bars, watching live music, sport, walking and generally socialising with other people. He loves films and wants to visit Hells Gate bridge in Brooklyn as his favourite film Serpico had a scene there!! He is planning to watch a baseball game as well.
Here%26#39;s a link to the FAQ (frequently asked questions) for the NYC forum. As you can imagine, top sights is a common question. ;)

On the left side of this page toward the top, there%26#39;s also a link for ';things to do';. If by ';an organizesed day trip'; you mean outside Manhattan or outside NYC, that really depends on where he wants to go. I%26#39;d imagine he%26#39;d be interested in Brooklyn. There are also some hip hop tours etc. If by organised tour you mean to see the main sights of NYC, the Grayline hop on/off buses are popular and the
onboardtours.com
are very good too.
There%26#39;s a search function on the forum so if you ( or HE) want to look up music etc., that%26#39;s another way to do it.
I suggest you/he contact the Big Apple Greeter service.
http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/
This service is free. Your son will be introduced to NYC by someone who loves the city and will cater to his interests. Plus, he will get to interact one-one-one with a person eager to answer ALL his questions. This service is pure gold!
I think he would enjoy a performance of ';Stomp';. For more information just ';Google'; ';stomp performances new york city';.
Hell Gate Bridge connects Manhattan to Queens, not Brooklyn.

If he likes movies, he can take this tour:
www.sceneontv.com
or buy tix at www.zerve.com
As was said, have him peruse the FAQ ';sticky'; at the top of this forum. He%26#39;ll find a lot of info there.
In the FAQ are threads on live music, bars and nightlife, etc.
At the bottom of the FAQ are collections of trip reports by solo travelers. He can steal an itinerary!
Finally, I%26#39;m sure that he ';has a life'; and has better things to do, but frankly, he%26#39;s the best one who can plan his own trip. Take a break, mum, buy him a guidebook and hand over the keyboard to sonny.
